My fear is it does sell, not just as a standalone player, but to all those buy new HDTVs this Christmas. CC will offer the players as a package. And if US$198 players sell maybe CC will buy the cheaper Venturer HD DVD players. This could snowball and we must stem the leak now lest it becomes a free flood.

It is not important if BD+ can or can not be cracked. It will happen eventually if not already. But HD-DVD advocates have no basis for criticism, HD-DVD doesn't even try to stop piracy.
I think this topic should be closed now.

Let people know it's lacking 1080P support. You get what you pay for.

Didn't you hear. Toshiba have ceased producing HDDVD players and have asked for all of their stock to be sold off. Next week they are annoucing a BD player.

What the hell is going on with all of these posts about HDDVD players. This is a BD forum.

Yeah,

This is off topic. And anyway,.. they can give these things away and it won't affect the outcome of the format war which is going to end with Blu Ray being the only next gen home video format.

It should be a genuine fear. If too many of these end up in peoples homes the sales figures will look drastically different. I'm sure best buy isn't going to ignore this.

People are just worried that the HDDVD player is cheap... and at Walmart.

So IMO, there are 3 possibilities.

1) Wal mart is clearing old stock of a discontinued player they couldnt sell well(at Sams). CC is following suit.

2) Walmart feels that Toshiba is closing the HD DVD shop and wants to dump the players. CC is following suit.

3) Toshiba is using their final attack before "great success" or "closing the HDDVD shop".

I gotta say though, I am pretty conflicted about what to do about the HDDVD player/movies I bought last week. (BB had a "price mistake" where you could get 3 free box sets with the $180 HDDVD add on + KONG + Five free crap movie MIR)

I sold that player for $130 with Kong. So now I have all these box sets, that cost me $50(total). But no player. (well I did buy an HD-A2, but havent opened it) if I feel that #2 is true, then I will return the player and dump the box sets unopened

I agree with Bullseye. The only ones that would buy the player would be someone that don't know anything about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Thats good old corporate. Sell everything who care if its 1080i. LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

Actually, I'll probably buy one for grins at that price, it's CHEAP to me and my wife won't care at that price. I bleed Blu blood but I'm not opposed to getting new technology in my house even if it's inferior to Blu. It's better than regular DVD no matter how much you hate it...LOL

Wal-mart and Circuit City could care less about formats.
They are in the business of making money.
If they sell more HD-DUD players they will in turn sell more discs,
and thus make more money.

Now if you pay them to be exclusive they don't care either.
They still make their money.

Cool Let me pose the question...

We all love BR-- heaven knows I love my BR player! But.... if I had , or more to the point... if **YOU** had the extra cash, would even consider buying an HD-DVD player? Yes, we all know facts about BR (better PQ and AQ) HD-DVD isnt AS good as BR but for the amount you would spend for a few to several BR discs, would anyone even think about picking one up? Just wondering...

You're just a Blu homer....it's technology. New users have just as many rights as someone with a 300 post count.

I will buy it if it is cheap and cool. Sorry...

I might consider buying one for $150 as an upconverting DVD player for my bedroom. But I can guarantee an HD DVD will never touch it. Toshiba can take their attach rates and shove them.

Absolutely, i see people dropping $100 for blu-ray's all the time. $200 isnt THAT bad. It's just a supplement to my home theater. It's not like we are deciding the energy crisis by buying one or the other anyways. People are going overboard on this war thing. Just buy what you like. Blu-Ray is superior but that doesn't mean you CAN'T own HD-DVD if you want to. Total Nonsense to say you shouldn't buy one or the other. Don't get me wrong, I hope Blu wins and it should because it's superior but it's MY money and i'll do what i want with it...
