hd-dud beat me into submission, I couldn't resist.....I was forced and I ended up getting it for $98 from Wal-mart's 1 day sale.
rest assured if a title/price were available for both formats, blu will be the one purchased. Last edited by swifty7; 11-02-2007 at 02:58 PM. |

I have to agree with the first person that started this post. This is a worry. Sony should know this from Beta all those years ago. One and i say one not all of the things that drove people to VHS was the units where much cheaper even though Beta was some consider the better format. Sony really needs to answer with at least a 299 dollar player which Sony sales people as little as a month ago was saying would happen on black friday. Now they are backing off that and they really should not. I agree that the 98 dollar player does not need an answer. The answer needs to be for the 199 player with at 299 one. 100 dollars is close enough for the uneducated masses to still buy blu. Before anyone says i am a troll i will list my inventory below.
38 blu-ray movies HD-Dud 0 3 high def displays Samsung Hl-t6176 Samsung 4065 lcd Samsung 4095 lcd Blu-ray players BD-P1000 and BD-P1200 |

Not to be funny, but then why buy a DUD player in the first place? This time next year the titles that are exclusive to DUD will be available on Blu once this war ends, so why waste the money?

when Toshiba had the outstanding Father's Day sale where you could get an A2 for only $299. Then, when the price went back up to $399, sales completely halted for them, because $399 seemed way too expensive then. could we see a very similar situation out of this 98 bucks deal, will consumers look at $198 and say, I'll just wait, it'll come back down to 98 bucks then I'll pick one up. This Wal-Mart sale might be good for HD DVD short term, but it could really kill their holiday. Thoughts?

I figured i'd do my part to thwart HDDVD's attempt at new market share.
I bought two HD-A2's, 1 yestrerday at CC for $88 and one today at WM for $98, one for my sons room (upconvert basically) and one for my office (the occassional movie whil i task online etc.) But they will see no new additional software sales/royalties from this. I will get the usual Universal or Paramount title I can't import but thats it. I will however get my 10 free HDDVD's ![]() When Toshiba loses...we win. Sold the DVD players these replaced for $65 ea. I ended up out of pocket about $30 and get 10 movies...Why not I say. |

Let me preface this by saying that yes, I bought a A2 this morning at Walmart.
Now before you start screaming, let me also say this: This player won't see the color red, as it will only get fed good ol' DVDs, I bought it to replace my ailing DVD player in the bedroom. To tell the truth, at the moment, I do not own any HDTV (planning on changing that either this Xmas or at Spring, along with a PS3 or Panasonic DB30). Now, what happened at Walmart, and the reason of my title. A lot of people have reacted like crazy to this anounce (the $98 players), but let me tell you. First thing I saw entering Walmart? A giant display of Spiderman trilogy / Spiderman 3 Blu Ray / DVDs ![]() Then, after I turn a lot around, I finally find the rather cheap looking electronics section, and ask a (not very friendly) salesperson, "Hi! Do you guys have the HD DVD player at $98?" Her to respond: "Yeah, get in line with the others." And to point to a line in the back near the plasmas/LCD Tvs. At this point I think "#$#$^ .. didn't think there'd be that many people in a 7:55am." But actually the line wasn't long at all. Maybe 20 peeps in front of me, 3 get behind me. Then someone asks in the line "Do you know how many they got?" "30." says another. Me: "Crap. with my luck, I'll be 31 and this 'll just be a waste of my time "(like it was already hehe). I finally arrive at the vendors (they were handing out a mix of laptops and HD DVDs mostly", but there were still at least 4-5 when it was my turn. I turn around, expecting to see a huge line behind me, but no. The line was finishing about 6 people behind me. So maybe a few didn't get their player, but the turnout was quite small I thought compared to what I expected. Walmart had not received its crapy selection of HD titles at $14.95 (I heard a single guy asking for em), and on the way out the pathetic HD titles selection was hugely dominated by Blu ray Titles. What amused me is, while waiting in line, I heard someone behind me saying "Yeah, Blu Ray is better. Can't wait for more affordable players". And on the way to pick up the HD DVD from the vendors, the line was going in front of a Blu Ray player display, with a Sony BDS 300. Too bad it was at $488 though :/ So there you go. 30 people got one, very probably most to watch upconverted DVDs (I know mine won't see the color of a HD DVD) as I didn't see even one grab a HD DVD disc with it, and 4-6 probably got pissed off, but it was nothing to write home about. Well, maybe something to write here about, to let you guys know it's really nothing groundbreaking ![]() Last edited by Elandyll; 11-02-2007 at 04:39 PM. |

you actually did a great thing this morning. you took a hd dvd out of a potential customer who would feed it red. software is what matters, obviously, otherwise tosh wouldn't be giving players away. what location is your wm?

I do mean this with the utmost sincerity and regards...congrats on your piece of junk. I too feel like stockstar that at least you kept it away from a potential future supporter of HD DUD.
