I didn't start this topic to discuss how to crack BD+, that was never my intention. I started this thread it as a way of emphasising how much of an advantage BD+ is to our content providers in that it allows them more control over digital rights. Control they do NOT have with the other format which, even when they changed the AACS keys, only got about 2 weeks of protection.

Default SlySoft ready to crack BD+

BD+ is a content code that interacts with the Virtual Machine found on Blu-Ray players and decides whether the player is hacked. According to the BDA, to successfully attack the BD+ system, pirates would have to overcome the AV content security system (e.g. extract AACS keys) and also overcome title-specific security code (e.g. reverse engineer security code). But until now, it is uncertain whether this title-specific security code (BD+ content code) will be included by Studios on a title-by-title basis. In that case, breaking the whole protection scheme would be more complicated.

James Wong, Head of development at SlySoft: "We already found a way to crack BD+ and we have just turned to fine-tuning. I should really think about hiring a bodyguard now, since this product won't please everybody

and if BD+ is title by title, it looks like it takes a few mths to fine tune the hack so for studios by the time the hack is out, the launch window has passed.

I would be more concerned with HDDVD. the slysoft guy said all LLCS LA has to offer now is BD+. as HDDVD does not have BD+ whats left for them?

Do we know what BD+ does? I understood it was Java based; if so I can see how it protects disks when played through software or players but not how it protects from ripping. I'd be interested to hear an experts opinion on this.

Amen to that. Don't these people realise that they are KILLING high def media. Fox won't release titles if they end up being ripped

Well, technically the DMCA makes it illegal (circumventing copyright protection). But the DMCA also conflicts with fair-use rights in cases such as this.

This is interesting since DRM basically can't work on open platforms (such as PCs), but BD+ was an unusual way of getting around the problem. I'm interested if they did a title hack, or a platform-wide hack that will work on future titles.

Country by country, yes. The guy that owns the company that makes the hacks is in Germany where it is illegal to sell the software. So .. . He distributes it online via Antigua.

P.S. I have multiple patents for inventions, mainly stuff that's implemented in code. I'd hate for my work to be ripped off too. I don't steal and I bug the hell out of my friends when they do.

A studio (or all of them) could go after SlySoft in Federal Court just like how Viacom is going after YouTube for facilitating and encouraging copyright infringement on a massive scale.

They would have done that already, but Slysoft is not in the USA.
