I sure the hell am not...the thing I find funny is about 60 to 75 percent of those players are going to be bought by people that already have hd dvd players...

an example.....

I talked to my friend that works at a walmart(they had 25) and he said 22 of them were bought by people that already had a player and wanted a second one.

I picked one up at wal-mart today to replace an upconvert player in my kids room. I figured I'd sell his 5 disc sony upconvert for $65-70 and onlye be out $30 plus i'll get another 5 free HDDVD's.

This won't equate to additional HDDVD sales for HDDVD format, it will mainly be used to play back his DVD's or if he wants to watch one the the HDDVD's in his room.

That said, I heard som hillarious conversation as I waited to get mine. and as I left.

While I was standing in line, two guys who already bought them were talking. A lady came by and asked "are these any good, or did you just get it cus it was cheap?" the guys chuckled a lil and said...just cus it was cheap. I wanted to laugh so hard but I was up next.

I asked for an HD-A2 (they had em behind the counter in the lay-a-way area. I paid for mine and started to leave. As I was walking out the lady who was behind me asked, "oh i'll take what he got" and the lady said oh one of these and pointed to the A2's the customer said "yeah the Toshiba DVR" I just chuckled with the A2 under my arm and headed out.

PS, not one person there had any movies with the HDDVD player. And I saw about 10 go out the door. I am guessing they had about 30 total

You still waving those Blu pom-poms?

What does post count have to do with anything other than prove you have no life and are a Fanboy sitting in mom's basement? Maybe people are coming here to be educated about Blu-Ray and are wondering what the deal is all around with these A2 sales? Post count doesn't mean anything. Have some respect for new posters and help educate them instead of blowing them off....

Well, if I wanted to replace an aging DVD player and wasn't yet ready to take the HD player plunge, rather than go to Wal-Mart (yuck) and stand in line to buy a brain-damaged HD-DVD player for $98, I'd simply buy an inexpensive DVD player to hold me over. I currently own 3 Blu-ray players (counting my PS3), but have also bought 3 Oppo DV-980H DVD players recently because they do SACDs and DVD-Audios also, *and* output the multi-channel digital audio over HDMI. I suspect one of these would be better for playing DVDs as well. (In '97 I bought a Toshiba DVD player and came to hate it...didn't keep it even 1 year as I recall).

All evidence suggests these are being picked up as second players and DVD upconverters, maybe 2/10 are 'new' HD-DVD owners who will spend cash on HD movies.

All of which will be swamped by the 40GB PS3.

You miss the point of it
The goal was to save a poor Joe-schmo from buying a HD DVD player, and then him have to buy HD DVD discs for it

It will be interesting to see how many returns Wally is gonna get...

I seen on "deal" sites that some are trying to turn around and ebay them, but I think like it was said earlier, "getting because it's cheap"

Default New Wal-Mart commercial... WTF?!

Just saw the holiday commericial from our leader in low prices and it is this moronic woman plugging how great her "low price" HD-DuD player was and how much her husband loves it and it would make an awsome gift for X'mas, blah, blah, blah. It really made me sick to my stomach...

Oh, by the way, this is my first post EVER, so hi everybody.

Blu owned: 43
Recent Purchase: Spidey Hi Def Trilogy, License To Wed.
Most wanted on Blu: Stardust (screw you Paramount!!!)

Cheers

Welcome to the forum. Yeah, I had seen the commercial too. Complete crap and don't be too worried. They won't make HD-DVD any real profits or help them win the war that we are battling.

Wal*Mart already gets as much of my hatred as I can possibly spare. Their HD-DVD fixation changes nothing.

Wal*Mart

I saw two adds yesterday, one was Toshiba with a cartoon cookie in it saying that 'it looked sooo goooood', I thought it was an ad for a new movie not a hddvd player.

2nd was the wally world ad: 'And it's a Toshiba!!' well who else makes hddvd player?? Not impressed but what do you expect from them.

Don't be worried, there is a limited supply of the cheap players, and it is costing Toshiba out the butt to sell them that cheaply. Top that off with it costing toshiba for the free movies, and you can see that they are hemoraging cash.

Shhhhh . . . now everyone will know about the Oppo. This is one outstanding player, agreed? It seems to have the best upscaling I've ever seen. [Jim]
