Funny, the Wal-Mart flyer came today. No mention of HD DVD, but they did have a section on Blu-ray Disc.

i am being realistic. content is king. if you can't have what you want in the format that your player supports and have to revert to dvd.. what's the point in having your hardware?

And don't forget that Wallymart do not reveal their sales figures - except to themselves - so there will be ZERO impact on the Nielsen figures from WM sales.

Most people are buying these el cheapo HD DVD players as upscaling DVD players (at least that's how most of them will end up being used for). The impact on HD DVD sales will be marginal as almost all the buyers will be normal consumers and not likely to be organising buy days on Amazon or swamping forums with irrational vitriol (which BD fans are also guilty of - to be fair - but not quite so much).

For me, the biggest impact in the HD DVD marketplace this Christmas will come from the 2.5 million PS'3 that will be sold. Definitely NOT from the 100,000 HD DVD player giveaways.

Honey when you get the HD-DVD player, see if you can get Pirates 1 & 2, Spidey, and maybe pre-order the Simpsons Movie!

They have a limited number of player, sold for a limited period of time, which is hurting Toshibas bottom line hard.

They are also selling many to the converted, buying second players for the home.

During the same period and beyond, the PS3 will sell 10/20x the number.

yes, you need to read this and write it on the wall several times over. you're freaking out as if this is the end... i don't think the bda would site idle if this was really something to be concerned about. honestly.

Now that is a stretch. I am sure that there are many people in a Walmart lineup that count the products that 23 people purchase. It just seems like something someone does naturally. Of course multiple checkouts with obstacles and distractions may produce inaccurate results.

23 people all at once mind you. How big is the HD-DVD section for Walmart for that many people at one time. It's like an HD-DVD posse rolled into town. Must have been right at the opening, and people were whipped into a frothe about HD-DVD madness.

i think you're right, i suspect all hd-dvd players have had a relatively high return rate thanks to these common myths we've all certainly heard/dispelled before:
people think hi-def is just hi-def and don't know BD titles won't play on A2 (and will return it when they find out it won't play a majority of their favourite movies)
people confuse hd-dvd with hdd-dvd (and will return it when they find out it can't 'tivo')
people think hd-dvd and upconverting dvd are synonymous, and believe their A2 is just a nice upconverting player, never buying an hd-dvd for it (and now dropping the price to near dvd player prices will only compund this thinking)

Well, from what i saw today, my local walmart had about 20 of the 98.00 dollar units. As of four this afternoon, the sales lady said only two had sold.

well fella's i did it too. picked up the hd-a2 at my store.

in fact i sold 2 others also including the floor/display model.

There is good news. Since I Pm'd it, i paid under 80 for mine and is thus a sole up converter. The free movies i get beings old as their crap anyhow.

The 2 i sold to people picked up no hd dvd and also told me their not interested in that but that its a good price for a upconverter. I agreed.

on the third flip side, 3 ps3's today with a total of 10 movies gone. All in a 3 hour period as i had to leave work early to check on my car.

Quite seriously, the sony upconverting dvd player is 100 the samsung 90... i paid 72 + tax.. comeon : )
