I'd continue my argument with word that Joe Public that shops at Wal-Mart and buys HD-DVD's (or Blu-Ray) isn't scanning the interent waiting for the next great deal to come through. He buys DVD's on the spur of the moment...meaning cheaper cost all the time is better than a nominal $25-30 cost.

Its the people that visit bargain forums which guess what are enthusiast. Most likely they are the ones that already own and HD-DVD player but want a second one as a gift or for a second room or whatever. Or they are blu owners that have a itch for Transformers (which will be released on blu anyway if they had the patience). Then there are the shoppers that have not gone hi-def yet and found these deals to be irresistable. Anyway, my whole point here is that it will have very little impact in the end. PS3 sales this holiday season can easily offset the number of cheap HD-DVD players being sold. At its worst, we'll still that 2:1 ratio still and at its best we'll probably see an increase in that ratio. We just need to maintain the 2:1 ratio to swing Warner's over and this so-called war is over. How anyone sees this move as other than desparate is beyond me. If you look at the trends you can easily see that they are at their last breath and we can easily seal their fate and nail em. It disturbs me that some people can be so feeble and buy into a lesser product even blu supporters that cant wait a little bit to get their Transformers fix. But its ok, I have no problem with Blu supporters buying this cheapo player for Transformers, its their money to lose and I'd rather have a blu supporter buy the player than a newcomer to hi-def. But seriously, at its best this is only prolong the war which is starting to get to me because this needs to asap so that prices on media can drop and we get all the releases. Anyone thinking that two formats will be viable are sorely misonformed, there can only be one format and we as consumers vote with our dollars. If we give HD-DVD a reason to exist then its our fault for keeping the war going. People need to learn how to delay gratification, hey I wanted to pick up Transformers as much as the next guy but I know it'll be on Blu shortly and I can wait. I'd much rather see an end to this format war and endless bickering and cheap stabs from both camps. All you have to do is look at recent events that point to one conclusion, Toshiba is giving it one final push to see if they can stay alive in this market and they are pulling everything they've got this 4th quarter. They saw how Transformers failed to generate a win for them, they know Warner's wants to end the war, they are basically paying studios to support them, they are the only manufacturer of HD-DVD because no other CE is willing to to jump in because it simply isn't profitable, so I ask everybody how does this not stink of desparation? Does anyone honestly believe that they can be a viable format gioven all of these circumstances? Practically the entirew industry including PC are behind blu-ray and people are worried? I'm sure we'll see some good deals for blu during black friday, and the lowered PS3 will move units as there are alot of good games available now, packaged with spidey 3 (which is a great marketing strategy btw) that lets owners know that it plays blu-ray movies. So, everyone needs to calm down and keep buying blu as they would normally and things will be kosher.

Some may take the time to read your post - but I won't. Not unless you take the time to FIX it. Ever heard of a paragraph?

Anyways, were talking about Wal-Mart here. It's not like the people shopping at wal-mart are really going to pay the money needed for HD movies. Sorry if that offends anyone but it's mostly true.

I will take bets on how many of those 99 dollar players come back. Lol.

HURT US!!!! lol. excuse my sarcarsm my friend. I wasn't trying to be rude to you or anything. So far HDDVD couldn't stop BD from from winning. Everything they tried didn't work pretty well to combat BD. Yes they have sold many HDDVD players, but the discs aren't selling. while BD sold less players not counting the PS3 of course, yet the BD discs sold way too many. A ratio of 2:1 in favor of BD. and continues to grow. the way i see it, to make short and straight to the point. HDDVD DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE AGAINST BD EVEN WITH THEIR CHEAP PLAYERS. I wouldn't be worried. however, i do agree with you that the BD camps should issue more ads to educate the consumers.

Default Best Buy Replaces Backordered HD-A2 To HD-A3 For Free

http://www.megagames.com/news/html/h...3forfree.shtml

Description
Right after Wal-Mart revealed that it would have the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player on sale for $98.97 Friday morning, Best Buy followed suit by offering the HD-A2 online and in-store for $99.99.

Expectedly, Best Buy stores were quickly depleted of stock and BestBuy.com was hammered with excess orders. The majority of customers who purchased HD-A2s from BestBuy.com received backorder notices.

The problem is that HD-A2 has been discontinued, so all those backordering customers would have their orders canceled. However, Best Buy instead decided to replace all backordered HD-A2 players with the new third-generation HD-A3 which retails for $299.99.

A letter sent to Toshiba HD-A2 customers reads as follows:
"Dear Valued Best Buy Customer,

You are receiving this email because you recently ordered a Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A2) from www.bestbuy.com and your order was placed in a backorder status while we awaited additional inventory. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this item and we are not anticipating receiving any more inventory.

Because we value your business, we will be fulfilling your order with the next generation Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A3) that is replacing the HD-A2 in Toshiba's lineup of HD DVD Players. There is no need for you to do anything to receive this upgraded model. We will simply fulfill your original order and your packing slip will be updated to show you received the HD-A3 and serve as your order receipt.

If you are not interested in receiving the Toshiba HD-A3 as a replacement for the discontinued HD-A2, you may return the unopened item to your nearest Best Buy store or simply contact one of our Customer Service Representatives at (888)-BestBuy for more information about how to return the product for a complete refund.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience. We look forward to your next visit to Best Buy.

Sincerely,
Best Buy Customer Care"

I can see exactly why they would do this.

No one wanted the A2 before the sale....
No one will want the A3 after it.

Hmmm...return the A3 to Wal-mart for $299? Good investment IMO. Triple your dollars in less than one month!

It's worth the same price. What's the difference in these two anyway? The A3 does DTS-HD and TrueHD while the A2 doesn't? Same machine as far as I can tell.

From what i read the A3 forces the DTS1.5Mbps track to 640kb. Sound like a negative to me, and also i hear the A3 feels and looks cheaper.

Just a thought but if I were dumb enough to order the A2 and received it, I would be pissed they gave the higher model to other customers at no additional cost, just because best buy didnt want to post refunds of $100 on X amount of units. Kinda a shady all aorund for a crappy product.

Only via optical, if you are using HDMI you are all set with TrueHD, DD +, etc, etc.

So if HD DVD owners that have a older receiver (no HDMI), they are s*** out of luck with the A3, at least the A1 and the A2 had a work around with the DTS option.

Default I am really getting worried now ):

As the first thing to say... please dont judge already based on the title, just dont.

I am a die hard blu ray fan, and though I pay average 55USD each movie from a limited selection in Europe (someone has to pay for the insanely low prices in the US) - I still stay tru blu.

Major sites like the TV enthusiast site (recordere.dk), gaming site (dailyrush.dk) and news site (newz.dk) - all signal the same thing. Tosh' HD-DVD is cheaper. It delivers HD picture and sound. We go for HD-DVD.

I have no idea how the concensus is in other EU countries, but in Denmark, its a bit worrying. PS3 is definitly not the must-buy for boys as the PS2 was, and Tosh is really pushing in Denmark now too.

Danish newspapers writing about the fine line between acceptable pricing, and the point when people will buy on impulse... proclaiming HD-DVD victor already, as they are crushing that line.

Please dont just tell me is FUD and to calm down - its serious rly.

Blu Ray is so incredibly more expensive in Denmark and Europe, and the only damn reason "we" have the 4:1 lead is because HD-DVD hasent been avail much.

If Warner dosent go Blu very soon, I fear HD-DVD will rape Blu Ray this christmas, REGARDLESS of movie line up.

i kind of feel that way too, not about warner but the stand alone prices. the bda needs to drop prices before this gets out of hand. yeah Toshiba's losing money on the 98 players but they are gone and they can do the same thing with the a3 next year only for 75 or 50. i love blu and have a ton of money invested in it, it would be a shame to see it die.

The real problem is taht its not bad for Tosh to loose money on a short basis by dumpin the prices this insane...
If they win by doing this in the long term... its .. ouch ):

It doesn't matter if people buy those 200 dollar Hd DVD players, there will only be a couple movies people will actually buy, only die hards like the HD DVD camp right now will go out and buy tons of movies, once the general public who want HD and want movies for thier kids and what not wont be able to get ANY disney movies on HD DVD or fox, and so on they will get a BD player. there could be a billion HD DVD players out there, but if the movies don't sell, it doesn't matter.

KEEP BUYING YOUR FAVOURITES MOVIES IN BD And if you are happy with the results you should not be worried at all.No matter what they will do even giving HD-DVD player for free ,you need softwares in order to keep them alive.

HD-DVD is a failure format cant be still living ,this is there last chance to fight us ......They are desperate badly

Nope, but if there will be a billion HD-DVD players out there, then EVERY studio will sell HD-DVD as well or even exclusive. The Studios only care about the money not about the format.
