Yeah, but the problem with HD DVD is if its already down to the price of dvd, the money to be made has be cut in half, or more, and the sales probably won't be as high as DVD so to make the most they dont' want to start off at the lowest possible cost. Stupid Toshiba effing everything up.

HD-DVD is totally invisable in Europe, those who do support it import most movies from the US.

HD-DVD is not on the radar.

What kind of pricing is Toshiba offering there compared to Blu-ray?

QFT.

Sony, Disney and Fox will not give up on Blu-ray, protecting their assets is as important as selling them and people will buy Blu-ray to watch their films.

Mods, can we please have a stickied "hand wringing" thread so we don't have to see these threads popup every 5 minutes?

i agree... blu has the ability to technically end the war by offering low price players, exclusive buy out deals (ie. Paramount), etc... but they are stubborn. Maybe they know more then we do as well??

Personally, this war will continue for a while at this pace....

yeah, but if there is a billion hd dvd players out there and nobody is buying hd dvd discs, just upscaling, no studio is going to switch.

In the UK its HD-DVD=£229 against Blu-ray=£280 for the cheapest (ignoring the crappy 1080i player).

Of course the red ants rave about the $98 player and the 2:1 sales ratio.

But thats not in the UK.... sales are 6:1 or 7:1 in favour of Blu-ray. PS3 is massively outselling the x360 now with the price cut. But of course the HD-DVD'er prefer to discuss sales in the US and ignore the rest of the world where there simply is nothing to discuss.

This is FUD!!

I am from Denmark too and HD-DVD is nothing here. "Major sites like the TV enthusiast site" please man, Recorder is not a major site. And they are only writing about the recent price cut of the 1080i player in the US.

Axelmusic.dk shows there HD sales from there site:

BLU-RAY HD-DVD
Weekly 74% 26%
Total 73% 27%

Other retailers like Moviezoo are reporting the same numbers around 70 vs. 30 I favor of Blu-ray.

All 55 Blockbusters in Denmark are renting Blu-ray ONLY, because the demand is way higher for BD. Blockbuster is reporting that 300 on Blu-ray sold 10 % of the total DVD sales.

Nordisk Film has chosen only to release movies on Blu-ray in Scandinavia.

Well I see some of the same sentiment on the norwegian forums.

However, HD-DVD is totaly invisible in the electronic-stores around Norway. They DO have some cheapo-player offers through webstores, but thats it.

HD-DVD has to push a LOT of players in order to break even with Blu-ray here in Norway. I know many people who has recently bought a PS3 mainly for Blu-ray movies. In comparison I know -1- person who has bought a HD-DVD player and he also wanted to get a PS3 for Blu.

As long as it isnt a sustained effort with 100 dollar players from Toshiba I dont really see how it can tilt much of the balance in favour of HD-DVD.

exactly and BD's Vs HD-DVD's are the same price. HD-DVD is not big in Europe and will never be.

Remember, Its all about selection. The Wii is inferior to the 360, but has already sold more units, but the game selection is next to crap, (for now) in has a couple of good things, but not much. Just like HD DVD, now most people who by the wii get 1 or 2 games, not 15, just like HD DVD, so there may not be as many 360s (BD players) but each person who has one has about 10 games, so more money is being made. Just like with Fox and Disney and so on, if HD DVD only has 4 movies to a unit, and BD has 8, where is the money really? HD DVD would have to double the sales of BD players just to make the same money. and even if it was double, it would still be an even race between bd and HD DVD but buy that time people will know who supports who and why BD is better. THis is why i am not worried at all.

Default I almost buckled.....

I saw that if you buy a HD-DVD add on for the 360 you get Heroes Season 1 for free. I love that show and I almost went for it. I was ready to buy but in the last minute I changed my mind and took my $179 over to the blu-ray section and went nuts. Picked up quite a few titles. Am I forgiven for almost doing the unthinkable?

If you have truly repented in your heart of hearts, you are forgiven.

You did the right thing. Resist the temptation. You'd have to throw it out anyways after you get tired of returning your XBox 360 for the 10th repair. I know I did.

Lets see.....I am at work so I don't remember all the titles but of note are Spidey Trilogy, FFROTSS, Troy DC, and many more which I can't remember, LOL.

I feel much better now, and I will be doing a Blu-ray screening this weekend with my friends.

I picked up one of these A3s (plus ten free movies) from BB for $99. Call me an idiot or a sell-out, but that's just too good of an offer for me to pass up since this stupid war doesn't have any end in sight.

Default The "Format Neutral" Folks

I'm a PS3 owner with about 60 Blu-Ray movies. 63 after tomorrow - the Pixar titles are destined for my collection.

While I chose Blu-Ray initially, I know that Sony seems unable to win format wars. I should have expected their failure to deliver the knockout punch, and now I think the cheap HD-DVD players will really start to make an impact.

I think there are at least two years left in the war, and I don't particularly want to fight it, so the moment the Samsung BD-UP5000 hits the shelves, I'm going neutral. That seems to be the only Blu-Ray player that's actually prepared to meet the 1.1 spec, so that's the winner.

Siding with one camp exclusively means depriving myself of some excellent movies for quite a while. This is entertainment, not war. No lives hinge on my opting in on both sides.

Anybody else out there moving to the centre?
