Nothing is going to save Toshiba now, not even if they drop the prices on their players to $50 - only most uneducated or hardcore HD-DVD fans will continue to buy their players. The rest will quickly realize even $50 is a waste if this is buying a dead format unit.

I'd like to have one at that price...just to see a few movies on HD-DVD that won't be on Blu for quite some time...

But don't worry - I won't be playing both sides in this war.

There will be consumers who will pick one of these up, but what kind of quality will it be?? At that kind of cost, I would hope the buyer will beware!

How many unhappy people are there going to be when they find out what movies they aren't going to be able to get for their brand spankin new HD DVD player? If Warner goes BD exclusive, they would be doubly pissed. You know people aren't going to do any sort of research to decide they are going to get the player, they will assume that EVERYTHING will be available on HD DVD.

They may move these out, but there is so little for the customer to buy in the way of movies. I think that if customers are going to buy into High Def, they will be looking at Blu as well. Let's not forget the 40 gig PS3 coming this friday, though it is double the price, you are getting the winning format.

How many people will buy a 1080p TV and then buy one of these only to find it only does 1080i? Wouldnt this just make more people mad?

I'm sure the quality is ok (1080i aside). This issue is the lack of software.

Notably absent from the OP's list however is any cut rate deals on Blu Ray players.

I would prefer not to see a huge blip in HD DVD standalone sales on Black Friday without some equally tempting bargains from the BDA vendors.

A 1080p set will take the 1080i input and convert it to 1080p.
With nothing else to compare to I'm afraid the outcries will be small.

Those with 720p or 1080i sets probably won't say much either.

I personally dont think a lot of people that are flipping through the sales papers will even know what hd-dvd is. I thinik they will just assume its an upconvert, but they will know what BLU RAY is. The name is catchy, and I work retail. Average people always ask what blu ray is, hd dvd is hardly mentioned. I think the bland name will make it a door buster people will just skip past.

I have connections with sears, and they do not embrace hd dud. The margin is low, and they are taking a loss with these players by about 70 dollars a unit. Blu ray for sears sells more units and has a better margin.Toshiba probably is covering the loss with a credit to sears. They do not stock the a3 heavily in store or in regional wharehouses. Believe it or not orders for the s300 have had twice the size of orders as the a3. This is just a filler item for the ad.

Don't mean a thing without movies to play on them.
