Even if people "mostly" bought them for upscaling(which I doubt) don't you think they will still buy at least 1 HD-DVD to try out their new toy!?!? I would if I had bought one...... Don't make up silly scenarios like this, its what the DUD fanboys would do.

By Tosh figures, 20% of PS3 owners use it as a Blu-ray player. PS3 sales average 125,000 a week. In a 4 week month, that's 100,000 stand alone Blu-ray players by Tosh figures. 100,000 is better than their supposed 90,000.

i suspect a very small percentage of these players are going to new hd-dvd suckers err, consumers.
i may be wrong, but my hunch is a vast majority of these players will be:
- going to existing hd-dvd consumers as a second player
- used for dvd movies only because consumer is ignorant of hi-def formats
- returned because consumer was ignorant of hi-def formats
- people going purple ($98 player and 10 free movies is tempting)

no matter where these players are going i expect to see this happen over then next few days:
- hd-dvd will stop spouting "attach-rate" crap since this fire-sale no doubt had a negative effect on those numbers
- hd-dvd will start spouting "standalone vs standalone" sales figures again for a week
- a portion of these players popping up on eBay or similar sites.
- a portion of these players returned and finding their way back onto store shelves

Not until you wait for 3 months! Seriously guys, HD-DVD sucks and they probably did sell a lot of units last weekend but making up reasons for why those sales numbers are incorrect or why it isn't going to affect software numbers is kinda ridiculous.

Listen, I am now 100% Blu-ray, but don't discount (pun not intended) this sale. I believe that the BD camp understands the significance of this price, and, in my opinion, it is substantial. Blu needs to work really hard at getting the stand alone prices down. Soon. There needs to be a $300 player out there that is not a gaming console. The cheapest Blu-ray player does not need to be a gaming console. This is coming from somebody that has no problem at all getting and paying for a Pioneer Elite player. They also need to bundle the normal remote control with the PS3. There is a large group of people that would be turned off watching a movie with a gaming controller. Stand alone pricing is the only thing holding Blu-ray back. People will allow a technically inferior product to become massivly adopted (Beta, ipod). If Blu-ray released a $200 stand alone in the next three months, they would win this format war.

It's not as much FUD as you might think..the Wal-mart advertisment headline was something like "Toshiba HD-A2 DVD Player"..the HD-A2 looks more like a model number .. it made it very ambiguous for what is already a confusing situation for many people .. the chance they don't even realize they have a new toy is quite possible IMO. How many - who knows - certainly some did know what they were getting and went there specifically for it..but the impulse buyers..not so sure.

hey, im not trying to make excuses, yes last week had a positive impact for hd dvd. however, while a lot of hd dud fanboys want to proclaim they just sold 90k machines and just really increased their user base, this simply isn't true. don't tell me that thousands didn't pick up a second player, don't tell me that thousands bought this thing with any idea what the hell hd dvd was (there are at least 5 hd upscaling dvd players at my wal-mart that cost more than the a2 did last weekend), don't tell me that thousands didn't purchase this thing with all intentions to simply use it as an upscaler and when their free hd dvds come in the mail they will check them out (or if they went to bby i believe they got 2 for free right then), don't tell me that thousands didn't buy this as a gift. thats a lot of people that didn't buy this thing to watch hd dvds right then and there. now ppl expect sub 100 players and hd dvd will not sell well above 100, just like with dad's day last summer.

I just wonder how much the HD-DVD PG will try to spin things when tens of thousands of these things are returned, they will try to cover it up somehow.

We have a problem here, HD-DVD's firesale is obviously a desperate measure with old stock, BUT, right now, bang in the middle of this crucial Q4 period, there are zero affordable Blu-ray players.

The PS3 is a bargain, but at this point there really should be a sub $300 Blu-ray player, considering the 1.1 capability and games playing 'extras' the PS3 offers.

i also would like to point out that probably a lot of ppl went purple with this and will continue to support blu-ray much more than hd dvd, but also want to pick up a few titles like Batman, Matrix, Bourne, TFormers, these people are not going to be true red hd dvd supporters either and will simply buy an hd dvd movie once a month that they can't get on blu-ray. like i said earlier, if they sold 90k players and i think thats still a big "if" only about 15k, ill go as high as 20k bought this thing to buy hd dvds right now. hd dvd usually sells about 10k a week, so whoopdeedo, they doubled their sales this week, but cut them in half til black friday, because ppl expect sub 100 players.

Another Good thing is, because of that $98 Player and price drop, People wont buy another HD-DUD until that price comes down again and the "Little expensive Ones" will remain in the Warehouse

Quote from the insiders thread :

The numbers are being disputed as we speak, 90,000 were available and at the moment it is assumed they sold out completely. This may not be the case.

Those people that bought an HD-DVD player will be really upset that they won't be able to watch any Disney flicks on HD-DVD. God I love Disney for being Blu-Ray exclusive, long live Ratatouille and Cars!
