‘The Conjuring’ Already Set Up With Sequel Plans

New horror films often seem like a great way to beget a new franchise — there’s a rich tradition of horror film series, after all, and any company releasing horror into movie theaters is easily tempted by the sweet smell of franchise money.

And so The Conjuring, which has been the benificiary of rave reviews since debuting at the LA Film Festival and going into many preview and word of mouth screenings, is already looking locked for a sequel and possible franchise. James Wan‘s film doesn’t even open until Friday, so that’s a big vote of confidence in the movie.

Indeed, while I seemed to like The Conjuring less than many other viewers, the scares and hauntings within are very well done, and there’s rich potential for more stories in a similar mold. That’s because the movie is based on a case investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) who are perhaps best known for going on to chronicle the Amityville Horror.



Variety reports that New Line and Warner Bros. want a sequel, quoting New Line president Toby Emmerich.

Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes, who wrote The Conjuring based in part on extensive interviews with Lorraine Warren, would write the sequel.

The Warrens have been the subject of movie interest for years; in addition to this film and The Amityville Horror, A Haunting in Connecticut was based on one of their cases. The couple have many other cases that could be full or partial basis for another film, or more. That’s in addition to elements of The Conjuring that aren’t really completed in this first movie, so there’s no shortage of material on which to base and develop a sequel.

If the films are based on more cases that the Warren's story, I'm all for it. But I really loved the first as it is, I would much rather it be left alone...But that's just me.

They should really wait and see how much money it makes in the box office this weekend before talking about a sequel I think it's premature to be talking about a sequel. And it has some tough competition this week.

I know. CLEARLY they didn't learn anything from The Purge producers jumping to a sequel talks, and then the film nose dived the next weekend.

I'm dying to see it, so if it's really amazing, maybe a sequel could work.

That's the most important factor to me, but I just don't think he'll be up for it. I think he really wants to do new things outside of the horror genre now.

Though a sequel to James Wan's horror film The Conjuring hasn't been formally announced just yet, we do know that New Line has plans to develop one -- and after grossing over $100 million, The Conjuring 2 now seems like a sure thing. But what's it going to be about?
Man fans have speculated that the sequel would center around the Amityville case, but Lorraine Warren -- one half of the real-life paranormal investigators on which the first movie was based -- has reportedly suggested a different storyline for the next movie.

According to a rumor at AICN, The Conjuring 2 would take place in the late 1970s and center on "two sisters in Enfield, England, who were allegedly possessed. Warren said she personally saw them levitate and even saw one of the sister[s] dematerialize in front of her only to be found 20 minutes later stuffed into an oversized fuse box, contorted in such an unnatural way that they couldn't have replicated it if they tried. She also said that the demon spoke directly to her husband on many occasions. Warren cited this case as one of the most terrifying experiences of her career."
Of course, as with any rumors circulating this early on in development, it's best to take this news with a grain of salt. But, if true, it sounds like New Line's horror sequel could mean yet another terrifying outing for the Warrens' big-screen counterparts.

I'm considering The Amityville Horror (the Long Island case mentioned at the end of the film) the sequel, since The Conjuring basically reused the whole plot of that film (and Ed Warren was involved with the Amityville case).

Also because The Amityville Horror was actually good.

Is 'The Conjuring 2' Waiting For James Wan?

A Conjuring 2 seems inevitable, given the stellar box office performance of the first film, but so far there hasn’t been much forward movement. According to star Vera Farmiga, that may have something to do with James Wan‘s busy schedule.

Saying she was “hoping to see Conjuring 2 sooner rather than later,” the actress explained:

Wan directed the first film but it’s unclear at this point if he’ll direct, or even produce, the second. For now, he’s focusing on Fast & Furious 7.

Well...Keep waiting, guys. I don't see him coming back to direct. He's been adamant about not continuing in the genre because he doesn't want to be "the Horror guy". I think Wan should choose his successor, and the movie can move on from there.

Hoping Wan will reconsider, but understand him wanting to branch out of horror.
He will be good at other genre's, Death Sentence was a good movie.

I just recently watched death sentence on FX not long ago and I love it. I wish it would get a blu ray release.

I'm hoping Wan does indeed change his mind, he's today's master of horror. I'd love for a Sequel to The Conjuring.

It doesn't have to be as good as the first, it just needs to be good in its own right. So far, it looks like Wan is delivering. That's a great teaser, and I'm excited to see what Wan has in store, he's probably the best current working horror director.
