The Matrix Returns to the Big Screen for 20-Year Anniversary Exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB), Warner Bros., and AMC Theatres® (NYSE:AMC) today announced that The Matrix, winner of four Academy Awards including Best Sound, will return to select theaters nationwide for an exclusive one-week engagement in Dolby Cinema at AMC.

In celebration of the film’s 20-year anniversary, audiences across the U.S. can experience Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ The Matrix in the 135+ Dolby Cinema at AMC locations around the U.S., beginning August 30, 2019.

“Bringing The Matrix to life in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos pays homage to the masterpiece that the Wachowskis created 20 years ago,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema Business Group, Dolby Laboratories. “Movie lovers will be able to see and experience unforgettable sequences like bullets flying in slow motion with the utmost detail - transforming one of the most iconic sci-fi films of this generation.”

That’s awesome! I might have to see it a couple of times at least.

Thumbs up

In for this. Haven't seen it in years, so no way I'm passing up a chance in Dolby (my fave).

it's already in Dolby Vision and Atmos for the 4K Blu-ray release so the movie re-release is late

This completely sucks. Memphis doesn't have an AMC, closest one is about a two hour drive. And that one doesn't have a Dolby Vision screen. Nearest Dolby is in Nashville, three hour drive. This should not be a "retailer exclusive", it should be available everywhere.

Totally agree. The closest Dolby is like an hour away from me (I know that’s much better than 3 hours but still far). So seems like a lot of us miss out.

It’s hardly the first one to do so, for instance the Terminator 2 3D re-release and Titanic Dolby Cinema ones were also exclusive to AMC, and I’ve seen re-releases be exclusive to Regal or Cinemark (which I don’t have at all). Since theatrical re-releases of older films seem to be a niche market, I think a lot of times they do deals with a chain, or just a couple showings as a Fathom event, in order to justify the release.

Even some format specific ones like the IMAX re-release of 2001 (which was awesome) may have multiple chains but still not include all IMAX theaters due to limited appeal.

AMC is the only cinema in the U.S. I believe that does Dolby Vision. So it's the only way they can do this. It's not really a "retailer exclusive" in that sense.

I think the theater Disney owns in LA has Dolby Vision, and some Dolby screening rooms for critics are equipped with it. But yeah, as far as anything WB could release in, it’s just AMC.

Plenty of movies get released in multiple formats: 2D, 3D, IMAX, Dolby Vision, 4DX, etc. No reason for this to be Dolby Vision exclusive or AMC exclusive.

Yep. All you need is a leather recliner, a huge-ass screen, and a sound system that shakes the floor. Good luck with that! (Fresh popcorn optional.)

No. It's not worth a blind buy at all. This movie sucks. don't listen to Rotten Tomatoes.

All I saw at first was "The Matrix Returns" and thought this was another sequel.

I am tempted to get tickets for this. I wonder if they will be handing out posters.

This was the first R rated movie I saw in theaters.

I can't believe it has been 20 years. I'd probably go to the Somerville one, but damn that is going to be a hike.

Got my ticket for this yesterday! Looking forward to seeing it in Dolby on the 29th. I remember seeing this in theaters on opening night in 1999 in Virginia Beach...where does the time go?!

I never saw the original movie in theaters, only the sequels, so I'm pretty excited for this.

Cool, I'll try to check it out but my reservations are all booked. Hopefully it plays for the week. Was surprised WB didn't do this earlier. There were some dead weeks in the early spring.

Mine are full too, but you can just "park" a ticket by purchasing it with a credit card, and then cancel and re-buy with A-list when it comes out. It depends on how quickly tickets sell in your areas too. Being in NYC, I've had to do this a few times
