But both are upscaled. These posters as well as the character posters (for both seasons) are extremely hard to find at Hi-res.

and they are very difficult to make textless also. I had to give up on the character posters for season one. to make matters worse, "the Butcher" poster with the finger has all the other characters in a slightly different position as opposed to the other poster without the finger.
Whoever designed these posters most definitely didn't want them to be edited.

Way too difficult, especially at low res.

That halftone pattern is on purpose and is not an indication of upscaling though.

I mean maybe the images are upscaled - the Homelander one looks blurry from upscaling - but that is separate from the artistic use of halftone patterns.

yes of course. but, i did not say anything about the halftone pattern.

as an artist, I've created lots of images with halftones in various dpi's and angles.

A usual way to detect an upscale is first by comparison with duplicate (like) posters. resize the other image to the (supposed upscale) size dimensions and compare.
look at the texture within the backgrounds. also, if an image has been saturated or color corrected in any way, that's an indicator that somebody has also manipulated it more.
I can usually tell immediately by zooming in on eyeball lighting reflections. if the soft light reflection gradation has a blocky squarish pattern to it (depending on the dpi quality) it has been upscaled. excessive noise is also a good indicator.

Checking the filesize of a large image as compared to a small image also. non upscaled images are usually very high in filesize. I constantly work with raw tiff files and its like night and day when you zoom in compared to a jpg.

one more thing, a jpg is not a lossless image. any sizing regardless if upscaled or downscaled will result in aliasing (blurring of edges) to some degree.
