I have a hard time believing the DV update will allow playback of DV content on non Sony TV's

SACD (Super Audio CD) :: essentially, it's a audio (only) format that originally, when released was to improve on CD (failings) and replace it :: marketing missteps and it simply became an 'failed format' that 'lingers on' :: fantastic sound quality and it's fantastic that the Sony UHD players support it (SACD & UHD are the 'ultimate in performance' of audio/video)

LG UBK90 :: it's an outstanding 4K UHD Blu-ray player (video) that will not disappoint :: it builds on the outstanding picture quality of the previous UP970, especially with regards to Dolby Vision performance/picture quality, without the notorious 'potential' drive related noise issues that plagued many units of the UP970 until resolved in final production units recently :: it comes with Dolby Vision 'out-of-the-box' :: it's an excellent 'highly affordable' choice if picture quality is important

If you want Sony TV Dolby Vision. ONLY Sony x700, OPPO 203, 205 announce up-coming DV firmware.

Currently LG UBK90, UP970 offers Magnificient picture quality for Dolby Vision, HDR10 4K, 1080p 3D playback on non-Sony-Low-Latency DV at attractive prices. Many of us have LG and Sony TV's and disc players.

The Sony x700 is at attractive prices.

Anyone wanting lots Bells and Whistles the OPPO's are an option. But you would need to pay much more.

On the LG Disc Players many peoples been watch DV over HDMI since Aug 2017 on quick DV FW grab. Think since November 2017 most everyone with the UP970 had the DV FW. Both LG DV disc players have the Netflix 4K DV App.

Be interesting to see if Sony x700 gets the Low Latency DV before OPPO.

I’m glad you guys know so much. I’ve looked online and haven’t seen anything about the LG players upscaling. Not to make this post about LG but just one question to you guys. Would you say it upscales blu rays as good as the Sony players?

I returned my Sony x700 after comparing it to my LG UP970 UpScaling. The UP970 UpScaling is better.

So I'm just waiting to see if at IFA 2018 in September... to see if Sony announces a new model x800 type player with Dolby Vision. Remembering Sony said its x700 is not its FlagShip model. Myself I own 3 4K SONY 7200 Disc Players. But I want a DV Flagship from Sony.

I posted way back on this forum my audition review of the x700. Which has no Netflix App with DV.
X700 Vudu App no HDR.

Hello, I put my blu ray of Star Wars on earlier (and ended up watching the whole thing, first time in years) and it looked superb. I'm assuming the X700 did the upscaling and wow it did a great job. I would imagine a newer film would look even better. I will try a DVD later out of curiosity

Just bought this player as my first venture into 4K. Don't have the TV to match yet but will be doing at some point.

As many new 4K movies also came with a blu ray copying started buying them about 6 months ago, solookinh forward to re-watch many of them in 4K

Are the 4K discs as tough as the Blu-ray ones? I.e they will still play with scratches and finger prints in them? Just because I have checked over some of the 4K discs I bought it while and noticed finger prints on some of them and it's too late to return them now.

Discs can be cleaned with dish soap + water and dried with a micro-fiber cloth. Never rub in a circular motion, wipe across the discs. Some have used ammonia + water to remove filmy residue from disc pressing plants, with great results, they say.

This all seems odd, don’t know if production QC is a lot worse, or workers aren’t wearing their gloves when assembling discs and packaging. Probably studios using cheaper and cheaper vendors to produce their “products”.

If you did the "selection setting" to make the player put out 4K you would know. Its not an obvious x700 setting.

Is your x700 connected to your LG C6? Or a Sony TV.

for what it's worth :: i own two of the Sony UBP-X800 players and two of the LG UP970 players (one with Dolby Vision and one restricted to HDR10; for personal comparisons)

in all respects relating to picture quality, i have found that the picture quality of the LG UP970 is obviously better with regards to picture quality (this applies equally to (DVD - HD - UHD; especially Dolby Vision)

so :: the LG 'excels' with regards to 'upscaling' over the Sony (enough said)

note :: i would expect further improvement(s), including picture quality, of the recently available UBK90 (specifically resolving the well-documented drive noise issues of the UP970 and other improvements not documented at this point in time)

Thanks, does this have to be done though as I would rather just try the discs first and see if they work. Will it effect the player in anyway at all?

You don't have to wash with soap/water but I've def done that with dirty discs before. I always wipe em down real quick but they will play fine right out of the case if there's no residue, or all finger printed up.

I don't think they are any diff in that regard form blurays

Klord 92 over the last 3 days I watched blu ray movie "Kingdom of Heaven" with Orlando Bloom, Eva Green.

I watched it first on my OPPO 203 with its remote's best picture mode settings. The OPPO has 3 such pic mode sliders screens for user adjustments. I was very impressed with KOH picture quality from my OPPO 203.

Couple of days later I watched KOH played from my LG UP970 DV Disc player. From its remote I maximized its picture mode settings(like I did on my OPPO).

The picture quality blew me away. I had to eject the disc twice to make sure I did'nt have a 4K HDR10 disc version of KOH in the UP970's disc tray. Yep It was a 1080p blu ray disc(Director's Cut). I found this so hard to believe. I was just blown away by its PQ.

But if you have a Sony DV TV... For future proofing to DV you will need a Sony DV Low Latency disc player. The LG DV Disc player is not for Low Latency. However, it should play 1080p, HDR10 onto Sony DV TV's.

Experience of KOH above was played onto a/my LG OLED.

Before I play a disc, I have gotten in the habit of just looking at reflected bright light off the entire disc surface. You can then see easily if there is a smudge or scratch (which you can't do anything about except try and play it). If I see even the tiniest smudge/fingerprint anywhere, I then just take a microfiber cloth and gently wipe it off. Just takes a handful of seconds. I've never used any fluids yet. I have the x800, and it is very, very sensitive to the smallest smudge. I, so far, have had no issues with this simplest of maintenance.

Thanks guys, I will start giving my discs a wipe then if they have any finger prints or smudges on. Is there a specific way to wipe them, is it from the inside outwards?

It does seem a bit of a pain but if it keeps everything working it will be worth it.

I think they say radius from inside to outside (someone can chime in if I'm wrong). No need to do entire disc, just gently on the smudge/fingerprint itself if there is one. Matter of seconds, not a big deal.

yes (correct) :: although not limited to (center to outside) :: it can be (edge-to-edge crossing the center) essentially diagonally through the center, etc.

essentially, a 'radial pattern' that can be inside-out or outside-in, or edge-to-edge that intersects the center

note :: it currently seems that using a 'dry' quality microfibre cloth is 'possibly' the 'solution of choice'
