Here's the owner's thread for your player:

Near the top of the thread on the right side is a search (with the thread) engine. Use Deep as your search word. You'll find several posts discussing the deep color setting for this player.

I asked this on a different forum but was directed here so I'll give it a shot.

Out of all the settings on my X700, the only one I realized I may have set incorrectly is Deep Color Output. Previously on my non UHD players, I was under the impression no Bluray nor DVD supported it and having it on would do nothing at best and cause trouble at worst, so I had it off. When I got the X700 I did another google search on the topic and didn't find anything different, so again I've had it off this whole time. However, it has now come to my attention that it may be necessary for anything higher than 8 bit color depth.

I guess I can switch it to Auto for now and see if I have issues, but I'm wondering if somebody can give me a technical explanation of what it actually does. In this thread all I could find was a couple of recommendations to leave it on Auto.

I was also wondering if the chroma setting should be on Auto or something else (4:4:4). TV is a TCL 5 series.

It should just pass full 10 bit color when enabled and playing a UHD, I use auto for both of those

Ok, I'm going to leave Deep Color on Auto and see if I run into any weirdness. I did a few back and forth comparisons with it on Auto vs Off with some 4K Blurays and didn't notice a difference, but if it doesn't cause issues I'll leave it on.

I fiddled with the chroma setting and that was interesting. The default was on auto, and when I changed it to 4:2:2, nothing seemed to change with the PQ. I then put it on 4:4:4 and the screen went black for a second after the change, and when I put on a 4K bluray, the image was washed out and too bright. However, the 4:4:4 and the 4:2:2 setting seem to be nearly identical with standard Blurays. I'm not sure what this means but I guess I'll leave it on 4:2:2 because it works for both formats. It also seems the player's auto setting is the 4:2:2 because the screen does not go black when switching between those two.

I don't fully understand chroma subsampling but it's my understanding UHD does not use full 4:4:4, I think diff movies will use 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 so maybe auto is the better choice there.

I've read that 4:2:0 is the standard for movies but I don't understand it much myself either. All I kept reading was 4:4:4 was better but clearly the result on my setup is inferior.

For now I'm going to keep it set to 4:2:2 and see what happens because a) it seems to be the same result as auto, and b) from my experience, the fewer options I leave on "auto" the fewer problems I run into playback wise.

Will report back on anything I find out.

While I'm here I'll also make a note that I have had to disable 24p output entirely. With 4K blurays it causes an effect similar to the 4:4:4 setting, on all movies it adds a little bit of soap opera effect, and for some reason the player's signal cuts out and starts again whenever it changes between screens (such as from the FBI warning to the menu).

Not to get this thread too off track, but one line I found funny in that article is "Nearly all fighter pilots have very cool nicknames or call-signs."

From what I understand, most callsigns are often meant as jabs/jokes against the pilot and you rarely get to pick your own. A few I'm aware of off hand include "Bozo" "Simple Jack" and "Gonky."

I wonder how many guys signed up thinking they'd be the next "Maverick" or "Iceman" and got something like that instead.

Yeah, not sure why the book reviewer wrote that because like with other things that’s only in the movies. Fact is, they’re commonly assigned as a result of some stupid error the aviator made early in his/her career or some physical resemblance thing (often derogatory in nature) or a play on the person’s real name at best, if one's lucky enough to go unscathed. Actually, many of ‘em we couldn’t even type out/or explain the context of on this forum because they’re not family friendly.

Although….for perspective, the creative transgressions taken for Top Gun: Maverick pale in comparison to much of what people watch for entertainment and consider believable…be it cop, lawyer, doctor, etc. movies or shows (for instance, my wife couldn’t watch more than a couple episodes of Grey’s Anatomy back in the day because “it’s so idiotic as to what really happens in a teaching hospital”) so bottom line, I think people will be happy with the sequel in terms of overall credibility. The attention to detail is quite extraordinary.

P.S.
one naval aviator who went relatively ‘unscathed’ with his callsign is - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post16925412

Sorry, for the sidetracking. Carry on

So I recently purchased a Sony UBP-X700, and I've been having some playback difficulties. I haven't had any freezing problems at all, but the colors on some of the discs have been wrong. I played the 4k UHD's of Spartacus and Blade Runner without Dolby Vision and they both looked perfect, with a level of fine detail that goes beyond what my old LG used to display. But then when I played Alita, Blade Runner 2049, and Joker, they looked super dark and murky, with crush obscuring large sections of the image and weird colored lines on the edges of objects in the frame. I turned on Dolby vision and the black levels and detail are now normal, but the colors are slightly paler that they should be, and it's super infuriating. Any suggestions on what to do about it?

I've noticed that standard Blu-rays look smooth on my UBP-700 for a while now and changing the video settings to 'direct' has sorted this out - thanks Geoffy

I didn't know either. I just switched my in-play video settings to direct. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

I've tried:
2001
Shining
Blade runner 2049
Lego movie
Batman

Anyone have any ideas? I read some people say it has to do with network pings so what I was going to do is completely disconnect the internet from the player making it offline. I'll reply again if I get issues again. I should note that on all the titles mentioned above they would freeze 3/4 of the way into the movie. Ejecting the disc and resuming works but I just can't seem to watch these in one sitting without freezing.
I’ve had freezing issues with Shining and 2001, also Casino and Apocalypse Now, it’s so frustrating

Thanks for this. Just to confirm though, after switching to direct, is it best to turn Dolby Vision back on? Or leave it off?

I was told to leave it off. Otherwise, it will try to apply to Dolby Vision to blu-rays, etc.

Are there any advantages of the x700 over the x800m2 -- besides price?

absolutely
  • if the title is in Dolby Vision - turn Dolby Vision - on
  • if the title is HDR10 - turn Dolby Vision - off
  • simply - learn which titles are Dolby Vision and appreciate the 'improved' picture quality
  • Dolby Vision - in the future - it will become widely reccognized for it's advantages to improving picture quality
  • note - i have the UBP-1100ES - it's not 'really' such a big deal to turn this feature on/off - accordingly
  • Dolby Vision (issue?) - i never understood this issue - i have several players (some with auto detect and others with manual selection - i prefer 'manual' as i am then able to do comparisons of both Dolby Vision & HDR10 'whenever' i wish to conveniently - otherwise, i have to use two 'auto' players (LG UP-970), doubling the cost, in order to otherwise do so - it's for this reason that i own several of the top players by LG & Sony (without regrets)

I went ahead and purchased this player yesterday from Amazon when it had a price drop to $148.00. I don't have a 4k TV yet but this will allow me to start buying some 4k discs in the meantime. Looking forward to upgrading the TV eventually as well but this is will be a nice start.
