Absolutely not, I recommend saving for a Panasonic, stay away from this Sony, I have had issues with UHD discs, HD discs and DVDs may look better or much worse, hit or miss. …as soon as the warranty ran out I put in a standard Blu-ray and it wouldn’t play it, put in my old Panasonic HD BD player and it plays fine, this has happened several times. As others have stated in this thread, this player will sometimes skip or stop playing a UHD disc that’s perfectly fine. Most DVDs look better in my old Panasonic BD player than on this Sony.
If you haven’t purchased this yet, don’t get it! If you have and can do a free return, do it and save for a better player! |

If anything, some models seem to be getting more expensive. The X800M2 used to drop to around $200 during sales, now it seems to only go down to $250.

I wouldn’t object to Sony implementing a feature to compete with Panasonic’s HDR Optimizer. Would also be nice if they offered a model with a front display like the seemingly discontinued X1100ES.

Sony could really help themselves a bit and sell a decent amount of players if they fix whatever the hell is going on with the freezing issues on a lot of their machines and by adding DV auto detect. Heck, they don't even have to release new players, just fix/improve the freezing issue and add DV auto via firmware to their current machines.

I'm getting this player in a few days. Never had a standalone player and previously used an Xbox and now PS5.
Can anyone recommend some discs to check for problems like layer change freezing or whatever else? These are the 4Ks I have: [Show spoiler]

Anything triple-layer (100GB). But the frustrating thing is it isn't a case of it happening every time.
From your list, in the short period I had the baby X500 model, I had Audio drop outs on: - Apocalypse Now Redux Complete freeze and lock up on: - Inception I also had audio drop out on Schindler's List but you don't appear to have that listed. Since moving to a Panasonic UB820 I've had almost perfect experience, with only getting the Dolby Vision / Dolby Atmos notifiers popping up again midway through Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Extended Edition Part I - I think it was the layer transition, I wouldn't have noticed the slight pause if it wasn't for the fact the logos all popped up again, playback continued without requiring me to do anything. Also on the Rataouille 4K I thought I had a brief skip right at the start of the film, as if it missed a couple of frames, but I couldn't get it to repeat so I could just have hallucinated it. |

I have absolutely no issues with any Lord of the Rings UHDs in this player. They all play flawlessly. However I did recently have minor issues (solved by stopping and restarting playback, didn't need to reboot the player) recently with The Exorcist (theatrical cut), Enter The Dragon (theatrical cut) and Infinity Pool. That said, it seems like everyone gets different problem discs with this thing so it's definitely a case of YMMV.

I just brought 4K night of the demons and now when it plays on the sony 700m it just freezes up all the time I updated the firmware but it still freezes up do I need to buy a new 4K/8K HDMI cable because the same thing happens on my Panasonic 820 unit although it constantly breaks up do both of the cables need to be replaced?

Of your list, I remember all Back to the Future movies and Gemini Man freezing.

So, with so many people not recommending this player why are you buying it? Cheapest Dolby vision player? Yeah, that’s one reason I bought it, also was having issues with my older Blu-ray player, so I got the Sony on BF sale. Then I realized I had a usb thumb drive in the older player for literally years, took it out, no more issues! Also, as others have described, you have to turn Dolby vision on for DV discs and best to turn off for non DV discs, also have to turn it off for 3D playback, and if playing on SDR projector, best to have HDR off altogether, all manual settings you have to go through steps through the menu for. So, I could have waited and gotten a better UHD player and I totally regret getting this Sony! What I’m saying is don’t just get this one because it’s the cheapest one with DV, your PS5 is a better Blu-ray player, though I know it lacks in audio and DV, I recommend saving and getting something better, …Black Friday sales are coming up, or even inventory clearance sales after Xmas.
