No it’s not. The disc drive is completely different, a much better disc drive is used in the 820. Different power supply and has no DV chip on the 420. People who claim they’re the same have never actually opened up the player and/or read the service manual.

Neither of those two differences impact the performance
![]() It has the same processor, HDR optimizer and picture quality performance based on every comparison out there that I’ve read through. Literally no reason for me to pay double the cost for the 820 if I buy another player. |

So time to say goodbye to my Sony X700, I made an unplanned purchase today, Best Buy early Black Friday sale on the Panny 820…I didn’t think it would drop below $400, as it didn’t last year, but I decided to get it while it’s $350, just in case that’s the low price of the year.
So, the Sony was not perfect but mostly works, and I read that, supposedly, changing some settings might help with read issues, so, question, thinking of donating it, who would need it more, local library or a school? |

I recently got an x700 and am still trying to figure it out when it comes to Picture settings, HDR, etc. And to be honest, my old Oppo BDP-103 made regular 2K BDs look better than this x700 does with native 4k discs. Between the Contrast, Brightness, Color Levels, Enhanced Color setting, but most of all Sharpness settings, I had well authored BDs look better than anything I've seen so far. I only have a handful of 4K discs currently...(all 11 Star Wars films, all 4 Monster verse films, Apocalypse Now, and Transformers 5). I've found that by turning HDR Off, and just using the HDR conversion slider works for getting the best looking picture. When HDR is on, or when I'm streaming HDR material thru my Smart TV, the image is really bland, washed out, and does not appear to have this High Dynamic Range I thought HDR was supposed to give. I've got the Game of Thrones set on order (Black Friday deal for $100) and the new Avatar Collector's Editions coming out in a few weeks. I always try to use Avatar as a benchmark for my A/V set up.

2019 Samsung UN55 RU8000FXZA (8 series)
The only thing I can find in the menu that might be anything close to an Enhanced HDMI setting is Input Signal Plus, and it is selected as On for the HDMI Input I have everything connected to. It's HDMI 4 which is my HDMI ARC input. I'm running my Surround Receiver to my TV and that's it. The X700 and my DISH joey are the only other devices that are hooked to my receiver. But like I said in my previous posts, the problem with the bland, washed out HDR image was the Gamma Setting on the TV itself, not anything with the X700.. It was showing 0 in the -3 to +3 slide, but was actually exhibiting the appearance of -3. I fixed the problem by just sliding the slider up and down again, and it reset the image to what it is supposed to be at 0. I just watched Kong: Skull Island and I was blown away by it's HDR image. Holy crap! I'm now fully in love with 4K HDR. Too bad by TV doesn't support Dolby Vision. At least I don't think it does. I haven't tried that setting on the X700 yet. But yeah, whenever this TV detects an HDR signal, it switches Picture Modes and the Gamms Setting is different among the modes, and for the HDR setting it was not appearing properly, like i explained above. Because whenever I woukd stream 4K stuff from like Disney+ for example, the picture was bland and didn't pop. I bet now if I go back and watch the Star Wars shows, it'll pop. |
