Both Sony and OPPO support all resolution playback between 480i to 2160P (codec needs to be VC-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/AVC, MPEG-4/MVC, or HEVC). Massive amount of lossy and lossless audio formats are supported.

Both the OPPO and Sony 4K Blu-ray players support the same video and audio codecs and it does not matter if the media being played back is an optical disc or a 128GB to 1TB USB sticks. 4K Blu-ray players basically playback almost any type of video and audio media regardless if it’s a USB stick or a optical disc. I have connected a powered USB 3.0 22TB hard drive to the OPPO UDP-203 and it works fine, in theory should work on the Sony 4K Blu-ray players also.
I wouldn't want to start an argument over this, as I don't have, and never had, a Sony UHD player. However, I believe that Oppo is/was kind of a "one of it's own" regarding media support. Magnetar might be close, but haven't really tested it yet as I'm using it only to play discs.

One thing I know for sure though is, that Sony UHD players are not supporting lossless audio from a usb media unless the file in it is in a m2ts container. Of course, one can pack almost anything inside m2ts, so yes, you can get lossless audio also from external usb media, but there might be some caveats, and that is why I "asked" what kind of a media file it is that we are talking about. There are standards regarding lossless audio, and for example, an atmos track wihtout the core is not going to work. And my other player, Panasonic DP-UB450 does not play an atmos track from usb-media, but does play it from an mkv file burned to a disc.

What’s the status of this player, in 2024, in terms of reliability? I had it once in early 2019 and it was just buggy. Since firmware updates, how’s it fairing for everyone so far?

X700 seemed great for file playback, I tested a bunch of stuff on there when I was using it, PLEX is just faster or I run my PC via HDMI both are faster. The X700 works with Dolby Vision files too if they are properly ripped/encoded.

For UHDs it's still a joke, will play anything under the sun except triple decker discs which always freeze/lock player into a needed shut down, so it's not worth the fuss except as a backup imo (or a SACD player).

Just plugged in my first official UHD player (I have been using an Xbox One X up until now), and it is the Sony UBP-X700. I think I got pretty lucky... I found it at a local thrift store for $25!

I am kind of new to this site. Is there anywhere I can find out which discs are triple layer?

Also, is there a list of movies I should check out to see what this baby can do? My TV is the 2022 Frame, so I am pretty sure it can handle HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Speaking of DV, is there also a place I can find which discs include it?

You can visually tell the difference between dual-layer and a triple-layer by looking at the underside and counting the rings on the inner hub. As for Dolby Vision, there's a thread in the main 4K forum with a comprehensive list.

If you have a Samsung tv, it does not support Dolby Vision, only hdr10 and hdr10+

Just check the site listing here for the disc you want to play, after awhile you'll remember what has DV/BD-100. Dolby Vision logos are on the disc/case most times. I really wouldn't stress too much, just play your discs and when something hard freezes it's a BD-100 and put it into a word file or something to warn you. The X700 has a design defect so you won't ever fix the freezing, but for $25 I would have grabbed it too.

My solution for the freezing (which these days is often little more than a stutter before resuming as normal) is to just remember where it glitches and then, shortly before that point, I'll pause or stop playback for a couple of minutes (good excuse to go grab a snack or take a bathroom break anyway), which gives the player time to get over its own lack of available buffer memory.

My X-700 did a great job with True Lies and The Abyss 4Ks, aside from a large radial scratch on The Abyss due to the shitarse packaging which caused it to skip forward 5 seconds at one point on the third layer. But if not for that, absolutely flawless playback on two triple-decker discs from one of the least-interested studios when it comes to quality control.

Disney has better quality control than WB or Paramount. Never had an issue with their discs while WB's constantly freeze.

I think the only WB 4K disc I've had freeze on me was Man of Steel, and I had some stuttering with Pacific Rim, The Exorcist and Enter the Dragon. All the rest were issue-free, including commonly-reported problem discs like Lord of the Rings and The Shining.

Does anyone else have an issue with this player outputting 4x3 DVD images as 16x9?

This randomly just started happening to me a few weeks ago. No issues prior (I have had the player since September).

If I mess around with the screen settings options, it does go back to normal. The only headache is that I have to do it. every. single. time. I play another DVD that is 4x3.

Any insights into what might be happening and how to permanently fix it?

Has happened to me from the beginning. It is really bad with DVDs. Now I just play everything on the Panny except for SACD and I have started having problems with them too. The player tells me the format is not supported until I eject the disc and put it back in.

I don't think I ever had a WB disc play all the way through. The Panny is a godsend.

Happens to me often, too. When it does, I just press the Home button on the player remote then re-select the disc and it runs correctly.

I have the Sony UBP-X700 UHD Player that has the ICOS hardware Multi Region Modification done by Multiregion Magic.
You can update with Sony official firmware over internet.

No issues with UHD or Blu-ray discs as long as you remember to clean discs with fiber cloth before first use.

It can be affected by residue on discs that also affects lots of other brands of players that results in video freezing/audio dropouts or discs menu not loading sometimes but a simple clean of discs sorts out those issues.

If even plays The Robe USA blu-ray from fox with no issues as that stopped working with some other brands of Blu-ray players
Just remember to turn off dolby vision in settings for blu-ray discs that has bonusview PIP videos

Great find at thrift. I know at my local thrift shop I don't check it very often now because literally there is a group of resellers in it every day waiting for fresh stock to be put out. One guy even hangs by were they process everything for hours. So say they put out a UHD player those people likely would be all over it or anything good. I wish I had that kind of free time to burn to just hang out at a thrift store all day. I did snag an X1100ES there that had issues but sold it for parts a few weeks ago because it kept having issues and it was the motherboard. That was the only UHD player I ever found there. Plenty of Samsung and Sony BD players there all the time.

Is it just me or are 4k discs noticeably sharper when played on a ps5 vs this sony 700 player? I've been trying a lot of discs I first watched on the 700 on the ps5 since i got it recently and there's some I don't remember looking this sharp. The recent mario movie and night of the living dead for examples, the grain structure seemed more noticeable and the whole image looked more clear and tight, I remember those two looking quite soft overall on the 700. Maybe I should look into getting a non Sony 4k player in the future so I can get the same sharpness but with dolby vision? (since it can sometimes fix issues with the base hdr10 layer) Discs can still look great on the 700 I've been using for a few years but I prefer watching on the ps5.

I have only been checking out thrift stores for a couple of months now, after I saw people get some great 4k disc and 4k players scores on reddit. I probably only go once every other week to a few spots to see if they have any discs, and hope that I saw something besides a DVD or a BR player. I will probably keep looking to see if I find anything else, like a Panasonic, or something better. Still, it's wild to me that I would even find 4Ks and 4K players a a thrift store.

It happens. People either upgrade the player and don't feel like reselling it or likely had an issue with it think it's defective (when it's not) and decide hey I'll just donate it.

Maybe your local thrift doesn't have that many leeches (resellers) around like mine does.

Finding a UB820 or UB9000 at thrift is a long shot. Most of the stuff people donate is stuff that generally sells for $100 and under. Keep looking though you never know what will be put on the shelf at these places. I am sure someone donated an Oppo 203 or 205 to thrift once someplace in the USA.

Love finding 4K anything at thrift.
