The recent mario movie and night of the living dead for examples, the grain structure seemed more noticeable and the whole image looked more clear and tight, I remember those two looking quite soft overall on the 700. Maybe I should look into getting a non Sony 4k player in the future so I can get the same sharpness but with dolby vision? (since it can sometimes fix issues with the base hdr10 layer) Discs can still look great on the 700 I've been using for a few years but I prefer watching on the ps5.
Have you set the Picture Mode to Direct in Options during playback? The X-700 is set to a really stupid default mode with auto-DNR, this needs to be disabled.

I have read that it's loud. Is the remote's signal strong enough to go through a normal door?

No IR remote can go through any solid object.

Infrared signals go through clear glass and clear glass is a solid object.

Another one that takes my post out of context. He literally said normal door, not glass door. Do I need to explain English too now?

You could get one of these https://www.amazon.com/TNP-Infrared-.../dp/B01KLPEQOE and place your blu-ray player in the next room. I have all my gear installed like this and it works perfectly. PS5 doesn't even need an extender, as the controller uses bluetooth signal.

I wondered if there were IR cables that you can tape to the device, rather than with the standard 3.5 mm cables. Thanks.

Heh, I had my PS4 outside the room for a long while and played games through the door because the small fans are so loud.

Not sure I understand why you would want to tape the cables to your device. Amazon sells a variety of these gadgets. I chose a USB powered one with long extension cable that allows the receiver to be placed several meters away, while the emitter is placed in the same cabin with my player. I could see someone prefering this the other way around if, for example, you want to draw power from your AVR instead.

YMMV but my X-700 makes almost no noise at all. Maybe a bit of a whir when loading up, once playback starts it's like it ain't even there.

If the X700 is anything like X800M2 in this regard, yes, most of the time it makes almost no noise at all. But some 4K discs, particularly 100GB ones, can be surprisingly loud to play. Not the whole discs, just some sections, usually in the beginning of the film. I remember this being a slight nuicance, until I moved all my equipment into the next room. PS5 was by far the worst offender in this department, though.

I can't play News Of The World on my Sony UBP-X700 player. All I can interact with are a Next and Menu option and both lead to a black screen. What's wrong with my settings? I've tried everything that's caused issues in the past but nothing that lead to a blank screen. Since I can stream it's not the cable.

Update: Weird, despite being brand new (but bought 2.5 years ago) cleaning it actually worked and now the menu layout is completely different.

Have you tried doing a clean of the UHD disc from center to edge with a dry fiber cloth

X700 was quieter than the UB820 most of the time, I consider the UB820 a bit loud especially if the player is close to the sitting position. However the X700 would sound like a coffee grinder with certain discs.

Can you point me to exactly where this setting is? I have looked several times, but I can't find it. Thanks!

While watching a disc press options on the remote control go to video settings and select direct

I can't seem to find an answer to this question anywhere:

Why is it when I watch SDR content on this player (a Blu-ray) on my 4K TV the whites look like they're swarming with noise/static?
