I disagree with your qualification of it being correct, given you said you lucked out and they were all DV. But we don't have to agree, as long as people don't use that erroneous information about "not needing to touch it"

When did I say I didn't need to adjust the Dolby Vision settings? As I recall, that wasn't mentioned in the video I recommended, and I don't think I advocated otherwise either. As for my mentioning the specs of the discs I've watched, that wasn't meant to be any kind of gloating, just a simple fact. I actually visited each page on this site to check, before making that specific post.

I bought a SanDisk Ultra Fit at Best Buy for $12. Plugged it right on the player as a permanent extension.

Tested Happiness again for the entire runtime. Noticed a stutter a few minutes before the point where the freezing occur. I took it as a layer change, like how certain DVDs pause briefly in the middle of movies to switch a layer, because other than that momentary pause, the disc never froze up.

So this is how it's gonna be for me.

Was this a 128GB 3.1?

3.2 Gen 1, and it's a 64gb.

Not that capacity is of any importance. I used a 16gb USB 3.0 flash drive when I tested the player the first time; guess it needs any storage drive to offload whatever it has to keep the discs running.

The last time I was in Walmart they had this entry level Sony 4K Blu-ray player on sale for only $158. My local Walmart still has a small selection of new release 4K Blu-ray discs, 2K Blu-ray discs, and 480i DVD discs on the store shelf.

My nearest location sells the players, but hardly any discs at all anymore, just Blu-Rays. And when they do decide to offer a 4K edition, its often a SteelBook at a crazy markup! Oh, how I hate such tactics!

Im thinking of getting this player for my 91 year old grandmother. I know thsis thing can struggle with some 4K discs but she will be using it like 98% DVD and Blu-ray discs. 4K would be rare. Will it play Blu-rays and DVDs without problems? Thanks.

Absolutely. It's only ever been known to have issues with 100GB UHDs. Although it did freeze up on me once when playing a BD, but it was a one-time occurrence.

Further updates with my testing with the flash drive inserted on the player, now that I had the spare time to play the 4K discs affected in their full duration. Key observations:

1) Plugging in a USB drive alone is not a fool-proof solution for discs that are scratch up or dirty with fingerprints.

2) The couple 100-gb discs I tried, like what happened with Happiness, exhibit a three-second (or so) long pause before resuming playback. Even when I rewind back to the same spot in hopes that would disappear, the momentary pause remains. Probably a result of the layer change.

I know I should be grateful that this player can even resume play after such a hitch, rather than freeze on the spot for an indefinite period. Still, to compromise on this and expect this to be the standard for future discs, it doesn't bode well with the overall state of this machine.

I've played Back to the Future, Highlander, and The Matrix all on this player; every one of them are 100 GB discs, and the only time they froze was before I changed the video settings. After that, I haven't had any problems.

I decided to give that usb stick solution a try, after going through yet another third-layer disc freeze from my Happiness set. Replayed the chapter again where the freezing was located, with the stick plugged into the USB slot, and the movie continues to play uninterrupted. Tested on a couple other 4K 100-gb discs which were plagued with freezing before, and it's the same thing: the movie plays the whole way, even past the moment where the freezing would start.

Not sure why plugging in a flash drive would absolve that issue. Is it a memory issue on the player, or some hardware shenanigan that I can't fathom? Leaving the stick in the player did exhibit a slighty oddity, and that's only in the player's system menu when I lose a signal for a brief period. Beyond that, I should probably invest in a micro flash drive and keep it in the player.

Might do the same if I buy a Panasonic UHD player. Some peeps say it's more functional towards triple-layer discs, but I'm not taking any chances.
It's not an unusual phenomenon. CRANK 2, which was notorious for this kind of issue, required a USB drive to play right. I think the only player to not have a problem at the time was the PS3 which obviously had quite a bit of storage space on the hard disk. I rewatched it earlier this year and even on my LG the USB stick solved the problem. The question is, whether this would also work on other players for 4K specific discs. I switched my 700 for my current LG because I had less issues but also don't have to manually switch from Dolby to HDR10. Might get a dedicatesld stick for this tonsee if it alleviates the problem.

Also had a freeze up on Happiness but it resumed after a few seconds.

Is there a way to ascertain that the player is able to utilize the USB storage in such a manner? From what I can piece together from the user manual and sony support comments, the external USB storage can be, besides USB playback, used to store BD-live content, for which a "buda" folder is created on the USB. This folder is visible, and can be deleted selecting "clear BD data" from the BD Viewing Settings.

I have 2 of them and like them better than the UB9000 I had.

That's not a popular opinion but I don't care about popular opinion.

There is one bummer with this player to know about. If you pause the movie for a long time it has a little blip when it's re-started. It may be better to stop the movie instead of pausing it to go eat dinner ect.

Also it doesn't do Dolby Vision.

Aside from that I love this player so much I bought a second one for the long run.

Yes thanks. I don't need Dolby Vision because it's going to my grandmother who I promise doesn't know what Dolby Vision is. She just got a 4K TV because her old set died and she can't hook her DVD/VCR combo up to it. I just want to get her something cheap and reliable that can play anything that one of her friends brings over.

The USB-trick worked for me too on Top Gun: Maverick. It used to freeze in the middle of the real canyon-run scene for me.
