Sony UBP-X700 has new firmware update available over Internet Update
M43.R.0295

Previous firmware was M43.R.0292

Note the 0295 firmware update is not listed yet for Manual Download from Sony Website

Only use internet update method if you have a multiregion mod chip in the UHD player

I not had the chance yet to notice what the new firmware provides

Only use this update with modified player ? ... not real official is it?

Anyone who has stuggled trying to make this player work deserves a working player in exchange.

I hope the new FW is the "fix" that everyone has been waiting for. In the mean time I recommend a working player. The PS5 actually does work well if you can deal with the other features.

I had no issues with Sony UBP-X700 since I purchased in 2022
All UHD or Blu-ray or DVD discs play without issue

Just make sure you clean UHD discs with a fiber cloth before using that applies regeardless what model of UHD player a person might have
UHD discs can often have a residue you won't see with a visual inspection that can cause various issues
A clean of the disc will fix 99% those issues most times.

The firmware is official from Sony

It's normal for firmware updates to show up on Internet Update before been listed on Sony Website for manual download

If you don't have a ICOS modification UHD player you can update over internet or use manual download option instead when made available

It's only if you have a ICOS modification multiregion chip version you are to use update over internet only that applies to majority of UHD players that have a ICOS modification chip installed not just Sony UHD players
If you update using manual download of a firmware from a UHD player manufacture website that can result in multi region function ICOS chip function get affected.

Well then,

I hope it fixes problems you don't have.

Others have had problems. I had 2 X700's and both were problematic. I think there may be a post or two in this thread from others who have had problems and maybe a hundred pages of posts with ways to resolve them.

I'm first to hope people don't have problems and I'm happy for your experience.

I certainly agree with having the discs clean and with understanding new discs often come with residue.

All the best and good luck,

Brian

So I have a modded multi region Sony UBP-X700. If I understand you correctly, this means I should only let the player update itself automatically via the internet (if it does at all) not manually update it myself?

Have you noticed anything else in the external storage? Any folders or files that would indicate that the player is using the extra space for anything but the BUDA folder? Also, does the player create this folder even with BD-live set to "Off"?

Yes if you have ICOS modification UHD player that's been done by either Multiregion Magic or 220 Electronics

When you got delivery there would have been instructions how to change region and a note in regards doing a firmware update
Only update using bulit in players online update system

You also would seen mentioned Firmware can be updated via internet at any time doesn't affect regional codeing
The Firmware that gets installed is still official version from Sony but the ICOS modification Chip does not get affected if the update is done over the internet.

UHD Player Setup
Software Update
Update over Internet

For UHD players that don't have ICOS modification you can update over internet or download from Sony website and manually do update with USB

If you have a UHD player with ICOS modfication do not use update via USB Memory if you dowloaded a firmware update from Sony Website

The only exception to using USB method is if Multiregion Magic or 220 Electronics can provide you with their own updated firmware that can be used to update from USB
There should be no need to get a firmware from them as update over internet will work without affecting regional codeing

Nope, just the empty BUDA folder and the drive's own setup stuff. It's an unused drive, it's only been in the player and my laptop for the purpose of checking the contents. I can't actually recall if BD-Live is on or off, but I haven't played any discs with BD-Live content.

So, is this USB flash drive stick thingy everyone is talking about just a regular computer flash drive?

Do I need to use a flash drive if I use the new update?

Bah forgot to check for the update last night, will try today. Anyone have any better experience with the upgrade? Oddly enough I watched Dune Part Two the other night for the first time with no issues, cleaned it before using it so maybe that helped. Has it seriously been over two years since they released a firmware update? Website still has the last firmware from 05/2022

Yea, it's a regular storage drive. You can basically buy a stick at any local retailer.

I don't install firmware via internet, because the player doesn't allow me to delete or unpair my wi-if information unless I reset the player back to factory settings. Rather wait for the firmware to be downloaded off of Sony's site. Even if the most updated firmware exists and can be installed, I might have the stick plugged in a safety net.

Thank you. I shall get one and try Batman 1989 to see if it works.

Interesting. I still don't see how the external storage space would prevent the player from freezing upon layer change, though. Perhaps someone with more technical knowledge on the blu-ray player or digital devices in general might be able to provide an explanation?

Well I'm no electrical engineer but it's fairly obvious that the freezes at the second layer change are caused by a lack of onboard buffer memory. In short, the player caches the last portion of each layer (which is located at the outer edge of the disc) so the laser can move back to the beginning of the next layer (which begins at the inner rim) and continue playback seamlessly. Clearly the X-700 is either underequipped in the memory department, either that or it hasn't been programmed to dump the cache after each layer change. It probably dumps it each time playback is stopped, which would explain why it tends to play perfectly upon restarting. It's basically the same thing your car CD player does to avoid skipping, except there's a whole lot more data involved.

Thanks for the clarification. And do I understand correctly, that it is assumed that cache you mentioned is normally stored on the blu-ray player, but when a USB drive is inserted, the player automatically switches to external storage? And the reason you don't see any files on the USB afterwards is that the player "dumps" the cache after you stop playing the disc?
