Right now I have a 1080p Flatscreen; an Entertainment Center from Costco, a BR Player and my PS4 and Speakers. All are plugged-in to the Entertainment Center so all the signals pass-thru there.

My problem is I didn't wanna shell-out for an entire 4K set-up all at once. I'll likely get a 4K Monitor, and a 4K Entertainment Center (and maybe even a PS5) in the near future, before the possible tariffs raise prices on gear, so I was trying to stretch it out so it didn't bust me setting this up.

So, my understanding is I can plug the X700 in to replace the BR Player I already have and just use the same HDMI Cables, and it should play all my DVDs, Blu-Rays and even 4Ks through my current System (downscaling the 4Ks) and up on my current Flatscreen. Does that make sense? Yes?
Yes, just set the player's output resolution to 1080p and it'll take care of itself. You may need to upgrade the HDMI cables to 2.1 when you go full 4K though.

a user just posted this in the Panasonic thread:

So anyone that owns a Sony 4K player and has discs freezing it's pretty simple:
go into settings and click screen settings. scroll down to 4K upscale setting and set it to off. next proceed to cinema conversion mode and set it to video. done.

Someone posted this a while ago. Tried that myself when I learned about it; didn't work.

As I mentioned in my post the new firmware is not yet listed on Sony website

At the moment in some but not all regions It's only available as a firmware update using the uhd player built in update over internet method.

Sony X700 UHD players that have the ICOS modification Chip that provides multi region function

Thanks for the clarification. Has anyone done this update and know if it fixed the freezing issue?

Besides Paul and maybe one other post somewhere, I haven't seen anyone say that they updated their player or even pointed to a Sony posted website update anywhere in the world with this new firmware.

I'm not saying that it hasn't been released or is vaporware, but Sony seems to be treating this with a very light touch. Maybe this time next year it will be in wide circulation.

Those of you that have discs freeze or skip, what is your set up? I have my player and soundbar connected directly to my TV and never had a UHD freeze.

Tested The 10 Commandments with a USB drive added, did not fix the 3rd layer skip. The only snake oil I haven't tried yet is adding a cooling fan.

Adding a fan is the only snake oil that worked for my 800M2. I think it's been close to 2 years since adding the fan, so I'm getting fairly confident that it's actually working. I still occasionally (1 in 10 100GB discs or so) get a short stutter during the last layer change though.

Last night I played the Black Hawk Down 4k steelbook disc (that I recently bought along with this player) which was scratched to hell and back with literally a pit on the surface of the disc.

I didn't think I would get far but this player handled the video flawlessly.

The audio was was pretty bad with lots of pauses/screeches that I attribute to the Mexican scratch factory manufacturing process.

The disc is going back but the $150 I spent on this new player gets a thumbs up.

My Oppo and Xbox have been great players to date. The Sony and Panasonic's of the world really have a mixed record based on reports on the net.

Apologies if this has been asked before, I've searched the thread and can't find the right answer.

I've recently gone 4K with this player - it's plugged into a Denon amp, to which a projector is connected. The projector is 4K and has a 4K cable, as Apple TV plays back with HDR when available.

Whenever I play a 4K disc on this player, it says it's HDR>SDR on the display, even though the discs in question have HDR. I've tried fiddling with the settings, I've checked the settings on the Denon amp, but nothing seems to work. The HDMI cable says it's '8K ultra high speed', though I did try a different 4k HDMI and the result was the same.

Any help gratefully appreciated! I kept thinking I wasn't seeing the 'wow' of HDR colour that others have mentioned, and now I know why...

The issue will be with the projector's HDMI settings, the player automatically switches to conversion if it the receiving HDMI-SINK isn't HDR-compatible.

Thank you, I'll take another look at the projector settings!

Someone on Youtube or Reddit posting this isn't evidence enough imo.
I double dipped with my Sony by adding a USB drive AND lifting the player with extra stubs under it and haven't had a freeze since. I don't really care which caused the freezing, but I'm just happy not to buy a new player.

What would cause a player to overheat? The amount of time of a disc being played on a system? Because I put on Oppenheimer, a three-hour behemoth, and it didn't skip once. And the player's always been where it was, or has been since its moved elsewhere.

Anything electrical generates heat, in this case it's mostly from the disc-drive motor and also some from the processor, but since the player's DC converter is external, it actually doesn't heat up as much as a lot of older players. I can play a 3-hour movie on it, and the disc will still be barely above room temperature when ejected. In my experience/opinion, the problems are caused entirely by the player's lack of processing power and/or greasy off-gassing residue on the disc, which can often be invisible until you start to wipe it off. The vast majority of freeze-ups I've had were fixed by wiping that shit off the disc and subsquent replays have been hassle-free (funnily enough, Oppenheimer was one of them). It could just be that the error correction gets overwhelmed trying to read through the residue, who knows. Clean disc = clean playback in my experience, unless the disc itself is defective.

I'm a bit confused by this recent mentioning of a new firmware update. Is this update just for modified multi-region units or also for standard players as well?
