I remember my Zathura Blu-ray audio dropped out but switching the audio settings helped it. I ordered it in a bundle off eBay and didn't want to have to send it back because it's OOP...at least when I ordered it.

Well, I've had my first big freeze, The Batman right around the 2-hour mark. It actually came shortly after a watch of the 1966 Batman on Blu-ray that also froze, making me think I'd been hit by some sort of Bat-curse, but that one I tested on another (Blu-ray only) player and it froze at the exact same frame so it must be the disc. Anyway, I cleaned Batman, The and changed the settings as recommended. It worked for me, but I suspect it's a band-aid. I'll be looking into getting another player before long but at least the fix is enough to let me shop around a bit and save up some money again.

Star Trek III is a BD-66 so it shouldn't have a final layer freeze on the Sony, but the disc could have a bad pressing or just dirty. Sadly I have forgotten to watch movies after a long time and found a disc just like this before. If it still freezes after a wipe down use warm water or do an alcohol rub if you're familiar doing it on discs. The Sony may just not like this particular disc and it could work on another player.

Had another BD-100 freeze up on me, E.T. Funny enough, it actually got through the whole movie just fine, but the first auto-played bonus featurette afterward froze within a minute. I guess the whole movie fit on the first two layers. Went back to try to play the same featurette separately but it still froze.

On the X700, go to Screen Settings and change the 4K Upscale from Auto 1 to Auto 2.

As far as anyone knows, it uses less RAM with that setting (outputting everything at native resolution and letting the TV do all the work). There's no set explanation for why using certain settings make this player shit itself (the upscaling seems to be the main culprit, but setting Conversion mode to Video also seems to help), but I have very few issues with mine on the current settings, and on the occasion I do have problem it's always due to the disc being dirty or faulty.

For what it's worth I tried those magic settings ages ago on the Sony and they didn't do a damn thing different. It's not a fix imo. This is about heat buildup not memory afaik. I still need to try the thumb drive thing someday but with the Panny going strong it might be awhile. You can also just install an external fan on the back (and only) vent to cool it down, that definitely works, yes it adds some noise but better than freezing discs in my eyes. If you're brave take it apart and drill some tactical holes like Counterstrike players do to their mouse.

So I just flipped my player vertical and so far this solved any disc freeze issues. I tested 3 discs that were virtually unplayable on my player. Terrifier 3, Zombie Holocaust (88) and Scream (2022). All freeze around chapter 2 or five and never recover. Just be careful putting in and removing a disc.
Steps involved. 1. Removed player from shelf and cleaned with air. Back fan. 2. Reconnected and placed on floor. 3. Tested Terrifier 3 while it was sitting on the floor horizontally. It froze at chapter 2 but recovered and then 6 really made it shit the bed. While it was froze on chapter 6 I flipped it vertically and it immediately recovered from the freeze. 4. Ejected and started over (leaving it in vertical position). Skipped to every chapter with zero freezes. 5. Checked other problem discs using the same method and no issues. Can’t guarantee it will last but we’ll see. Last edited by FN2190; 02-01-2025 at 12:35 AM. |

I own the UBP-X700 and I have some questions about Dolby Vision/HDR and 2K discs. My TV is an LG C4 OLED.
Why does Dolby Vision activate on 2K discs, even when the Dolby Vision logo is not present anywhere on the disc case? Why does HDR activate on 2K discs when the HDR logo is not present anywhere on the disc case? (To my eyes, I can't tell a difference between the HDR that displays on HDR labeled 4K discs and 2K discs that have no HDR label.) These are very good things! I'm just curious as to what's going on, as I thought HDR and Dolby Vision was just for 4K discs. Thanks! |

DV output has to be turned off and on manually in the settings before you watch something. Annoying to have to do before popping in any disc but it’s not a big deal, just something to pay attention to. Otherwise, forcing DV on a non-DV disc is like setting the TV to “vivid” mode or what have you.

I have this unit it in another room and I went to unplug it to dust. So when I unplugged it the yellow plastic piece part on the power supply broke off. So I have to remove motherboard and super glue it. Anyone have a recommendation for a good cheap super glue to hold it on?

So you have to dive into the Setup menus for every disk to set DV on or off manually. And the actual DV content can be hard to find--I've had at least one or two disks that actually said DV on the box that did not, in fact, have DV. It all got too annoying so I recently replaced my Sony ES1100 (basically the same as an X800M2) with a Panasonic UB-820 which auto switches DV on and off depending on the actual disk content without any manual intervention. Much better! The HCX image processor also enhances BD and 4K disks--supposedly even DVDs though I haven't tried many of those. For me it was worth the money, and I had gotten my money's worth out of the six year old Sony which I gave to my gf. You can get auto-switching for DV on the much cheaper Panasonic UB-450, but not the HCX processor. (The Panasonic UB-420 has the HCX processor but no DV, so you don't want that). |

If i'm not mistaken, the mediatek chipset on the Sony is the same, or at least very similar to ones found in other 4K players such as the Oppo 203 and Pioneer LX500. So I don't buy the claim that DV auto is a hardware issue. If anything, most likely Sony it's just not interested in spending $$ to have their engineering team implement auto dv.
