Congratulations. I’ve had catastrophic lock-up freezing with every single 3-layer disc I’ve played that’s longer than 2 hours except Casino, and even that one clearly stuttered. It simply cannot handle the jump to the third layer/hour. I don’t know if you’re supremely lucky or just live in a freezer that makes overheating impossible but that doesn’t change the fact that my machine craps its pants every time I watch good, long 4k disc and I had to uncrew and completely remove the top of the case for it just to resume playback and finish the darn movie without it immediately locking up again like all the rest.

Damn. After almost four years, I think my beloved UBP-X700 is finally starting to act up. I hadn't used it in a couple of weeks, and when I went to play a new Region B blu-ray I just got yesterday, it wouldn't play it at all. It recognized the disc, but it wouldn't load the movie. I tried another Region B blu-ray, and I had to tinker with the player for it to eventually play. Region A discs and 4K UHDs still seem to play fine. If worse comes to worse, I can just get a new one, but it still sucks having to spend the $300.

It's rather strange. The disc that wouldn't play at all was from Spain. The one I had to tinker with was from Germany. But then I tried one from the UK, and it played like clockwork, so now I'm a little confused. I wonder if it's just the discs.

A lot of discs are region-free or dual-coded even if they state only one region on the sleeve. Still, keep an eye on it. It doesn't sound like a player hardware issue either way.

The Spanish disc that wouldn't play at all was region-free. The German and UK ones were Region B. I'll definitely keep an eye on it. I love my player and would hate to see it stop working.

An edge case to say the least, from a North American POV, but I did appreciate this player's proper 50Hz output the other day when I watched a German 4K 50Hz disc. My Samsung player would convert it to 60Hz, but the Sony kept it at 50Hz.

Purchased recently, but I can't resolve one very annoying issue. I'm seeing precious little in the manual or elsewhere, about whether/how Yupp TV can be removed from this player. Factory reset doesn't make Yupp TV tiles (Featured Apps) on home screen go away. I don't care to see that tile every time I use this device. The Options pop-up per the Options button on the remote, oddly enough, has no "delete" choice for the app about which you're inquiring, when you use that button on the remote. Going into the list of apps on the device, outside of Featured Apps still won't allow you to remove it. Figured since this device now has some age on it, someone may have figured out how to get rid of the Yupp TV app. Thank you.

Sony and LG have never supported HDR10+. Support for the format on streaming is decent but it is basically dead on discs, with even German companies moving away from it.
The lack of DV auto switching is certainly an oversight, but then again so is the lack of source direct mode on the Panasonic players. |

Alien UHD has HDR10+, I think Second Sight's Dawn of the Dead has it too, I can't think of many other discs I own that have it, it's a dead formula outside of streaming and definitely not a selling point for any gear

So apparently the new X700K still does not have automatic Dolby Vision? I ask this based on its user manual as the Dolby Vision section is being described exactly as in the x700 manual.
What do you think? |
