The OPPO UDP-203 is the reference 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player that all others are compared too. But that OPPO is $549, the Sony is for mainstream consumers that shop retail stores and are looking for a quality player at a cheaper price.

Many of those DV Capable/Ready Players shopped by Mainstream consumers have PQ equal or better than the OPPO 203 Reference Player. Why is OPPO 203 a so called "Reference Player".

Bells and Whistles?

Weighs over 3 pounds? Over 5 pounds?

BackLit Remo remote?

Has DV Mode except for Sony DV Ready TVs?

?????

What about all those Mainstream Consummers buying Reference OLEDs. Or Reference LED LCD TV's. But Not buying OPPO 203. They Just Not Reference Material Buyers?

The OPPO offers a better picture quality when playing Dolby Vision HDR discs, but that advantage will change when Sony does their firmware update. The picture and sound is the same on the HDMI output for both Sony and OPPO players except when it comes to upscaling and downscaling. The source direct feature is much better on the OPPO compared to Sony. The OPPO has better build quality.

I did a very extensive user review comparing the OPPO UDP-203 to the Sony UBP-X800 and listed all the pluses and minuses to both players. The UBP-X700 drops DVD-Audio playback but adds Dolby Vision HDR.

I would like to get this player for it's Dolby Vision capabilities, but I won't. I own a X800 and I have way to many UHD Blu Rays freeze up. I'm not sure that I trust Sony players anymore.

Man. Oh. Man.

We got VUDU 4K. But is it for VUDU HDR10??? Only.

Or will it make Sony DV TV's screen pop out with the bright
"Dolby Vision" Alert.

Knowing Vudu Inc. has a HDR10 Vudu App and DV Vudu App.

Which ever. We want Atmos! from Vudu.

Thank You Bob.

He could say the same thing about the Sony "low latency" DV profile as well. That the TVs are perfectly capable of doing all the DV processing but Sony's aim is to sell more Sony players.

I honestly have no idea how much truth there is to any of this.

We just have to go to Stores and Buy Everything.
Test, Test, Test. Get really Good at Replacing Stuff/Exchanging Stuff until our Home Theater can do the Happy.

Whats Complicates. Is some of us have our sights on next Gen too. Sony Z9F, 930F, 940F, A1F. Will 2018 Sony Disc Players talk DV-DV with them.

And x700 DV FW Spring Summer. That can be Aug 2018

There is no 930F/940F; it's just the 900F now. Don't let the name fool you, it's not a downgrade.

Nex Gen. 2019. "F"'s models. Sony Heck. May call them "H" series. For Happy.

Maybe even "G" for the Ghost Series.

2019 will feature the X900G if they stick with the same pattern.

Sony has always been like that. It's a business company, selling produits and more external add-ons instead of upgrading their original products through firmware updates for their deluxe TVs and first generation 4K Blu-ray player...800/1000ES.

To counteract this nasty habbit in the video world we live in today, go with the Oppo, and get this X700 when on sale for say half price as a movie apps streamer, to complement your Oppo, or for an auxiliary room, an add-on, a secondary add-on. Or plug it in the HDMI input on the back of the Oppo. Now you make good use of both players, playing together.

* In the X700, they set the secondary audio mix [BD Audio MIX Setting] to OFF, as default. Seems like someone @ Sony saw the light, switched to a better brand of coffee, or read some thread here @ forum.blu-ray.com

So, it will eventually get Dolby Vision, but right now it doesn't have it.
So, why buy it then? Well, for UHD streaming, that's why.
Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, Vudu UHD streaming. Oppo doesn't do that, you need Roku and Roku doesn't do Vudu UHD/HDR, or does it.
Who else can stream all of them in UHD, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
It's a streaming war, and it will continue with the next Sony 4K BR player model after the X700.
There is no illusion here, this is the name of the game.
And the reason why I suggested to wait till it really gets Dolby Vision, because @ that time there would be sales on it I'm certain. First $199, then $149, and $99 I bet on the next Boxing Day if not before.
The apps will still be there, they won't disappear suddenly.

And, more players will appear in the interim, with apps too, improved apps, UHD streaming, HDR10 streaming, Dolby Vision streaming, ...all that streaming jazz with the big jazz trumpeters; HDRollywood, Frank Dolby, Bing Sinatra, Vision Armstrong and Glories Day.

Disclamer:

Im visualizing. Next Gen Sony TV's.

X1 Ultimate Chip. With HDMI 2 1. But its 4K. The first two, higher Bandwith and A Big Mighty Processor

Will allow for Much Enhanced HDR, DV PQ.

SOME of us waiting for near two years might just wait a bit longer. Write off that 2017-2018 Technology.

Not really, I'm tired of the two rain men and Rocky III shitting up every thread they can. And when you report the posts, the mods do not do shit. This place has become a dump where posters are allowed to derail threads at will with nonsense.

I reckon I'll just stop trying to post tech info here, and spend my time on AVS and HTF where they actually control things. LOTR was banned for this BS from AVS a long time ago, but here he just continues.
