From now on, it would be helpful to everyone else, especially in a complaint post, if people would mention which player version (the old X700 or the new X700U) they're using.

Time for another round of "Can this 4K disc play this UHD player without error?"!

Today's guest: Panic Room

Results: Playback froze early in chapter 6, even showed artifacts. Tried cleaning it up twice, same issues. It's possibly the disc wasn't properly dry, and thus the freezes still occur. Tried the cleaning process the third way and let it dry overnight, waiting for results. I assume Sony discs are in the clear, since I own four Sony 4K movies that play fine, albeit three of the four are double-layered discs. That's what I get for assumptions.

I don't capture why so many have problems with this player. Since the last fw update some time again, it hasn't skipped a beat.

I will open mine and clean it and see what's in there, although my basement doesn't have much dust to begin with.

I don't tend to use alcohol with plastic...

Alcohol won't damage discs. It evaporates too quickly to have any corrosive effect.

Mine originally froze a few times when I bought it, but then I found some instructions online for a workaround. Since then, I haven't had any problems.

What strategies worked for you to avoid any issues?

It's all under the Screen Settings sub-menu, located in the primary Setup. First, always keep the built-in upscaler turned off, for two reasons. Sony's builds in that department tend to suck, and the software easily gets confused, adding information to a disc that's already 4K. So it's best all-around, to let your TV handle that.

Next up is the player's Cinema Conversion Mode - keep it set to the "video" option. It was designed to analyze both film-based and video-based content, switching conversions for better playback. Sony uses the "auto" setting by default, and from what I've heard, not many trust its reliability.

Lastly, some people report occasional problems with triple-layer 100 GB BD-1 discs, but on the whole it seems to be rare; I haven't had any problems with that.

It doesn't matter if any Sony player plays a 4K without issues, what matters is if it plays a BD100 disc successfully, specifically ones that are known to freeze such as Ten Commandments or The Beastmaster.

Put on the Snowpiercer disc. Cleaned the disc with the same alcoholic solution as the others, waited 30 minutes before putting it on. Long story short: it froze---pun not intended---a bit after the passing of the Yekaterina Bridge scene.

Do you have the K/U version or the old version of the player?

Should we open a new thread for the U/K model? Like another member said, this is very confusing as you don't know which version everybody here is talking about.

Thanks! I’ll give this a try and see if it helps. I packed this player up a while ago after getting endlessly frustrated with it, but I’ll give it another go.

I bought mine summer of last year, and changed those settings within a month of various frustrations (my first player was a different brand which behaved even worse).
