Supporting a profile is complex, the earlier ATV 4K profile was only base layer, not a enhancement layer or MEL (minimum enhancement layer) like with UHD media.

Just look at the description of a Dolby Vision bitstream profile its quite telling:

Quote:
The Dolby Vision profiles provide a rich feature set to support various ecosystems, such as over- the-top streaming and Blu-ray Discs. Dolby Vision deliverables based on these profiles support many different device implementation types, such as graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerated software implementations, full-fledged hardware implementations, and hardware/ software combinations. It is not practical to implement an application capable of supporting the complete Dolby Vision feature set. A limited number of subsets of the Dolby Vision features are stipulated by means of bitstream profiles and levels. Refer to the appropriate Dolby Vision kit for more information about which profiles and levels are important to support in your product.
A Dolby Vision profile is composed of:
  • A video codec profile (such as HEVC main10).
  • Its associated standards-based video elementary stream metadata (such as High-Efficiency Video Coding [HEVC] video usability information [VUI] and/or supplemental enhancement information [SEI] messages) used to encode one or two baseband video signals (a base layer and possibly an enhancement layer).
  • Dolby Vision composer metadata and Dolby Vision content metadata carried and encoded in a specified fashion appropriate for the codec. Dolby Vision metadata may be carried as a private network abstraction layer (NAL) unit, a standardized and/or private SEI message, or other carriage methods appropriate for elementary streams of a particular video codec.
  • Certain Dolby Vision profiles are cross-compatible based on video elementary stream metadata, such as VUI. Such bitstreams:
    • Can be played by a decoder system that is unaware of Dolby Vision using only the base layer
    • Result in a standards-based base-layer video signal, such as HDR10, or BT.709 standard dynamic range (SDR), using video elementary stream metadata (for example, Dolby Vision bitstream profile ID or VUI)
    • Imply additional (potentially duplicate) stream signaling for a base layer and an enhancement layer

Hey, I’m on board with it takes hard work to make complex stuff work together. I worked 5 years in an IT department for a Fortune 200 company. (Many years ago, think mainframe. )

Maybe Sony just needs to do some fine tuning. OTOH I remember the DV rollout they had for the displays, something like ‘we were told this would work with ALL the DV players’, when it was OBVIOUS Sony hadn’t bench tested ANY other brand player with their updated TV.

Just so patently shoddy when there are the above comments/issues from the starter gun.

I am very happy with Oppo and their quality and competent firmware updates.
My 203 is my first, it’s why I want a 205 from the next shipment, finally going all in for the home theatre setup.

Sony appears rolling out DV on stick for TV's. X900F now. Others soon.

Be sniffing around DV FW for x700.

See comment section. Turning on DV at settings.

Glad DV is here! I can confirm that it works just fine on my LG OLED.

It may be my imagination but DV seems to look better in dark scenes as I feel like I can see more detail in the dark scenes.

Glad to hear no major issues with LG oled for you! And, at least everything every major review site has said, DV does tend to have better dark scenes so...

I'm excited to get home and install it!

agreed (not your imagination) :: i expect you will notice more overall improvements to picture quality viewing 'over time'

personally :: i find Dolby Vision 'quite remarkable'; just 'more natural and realistic' than any other option (simple as that; just makes any movie more appreciated - to me)

nice to know it works with non-Sony displays (impressive - wanted to know)

I suspect it has to do with dynamic metadata.

On the E7 OLED why do x700 make everything DV. 1080p to DV. HDR10 to DV.

Is there a setting to correct this?

Turn off the DV setting in the settings screen.

Also wanting to test the firmware out, but ill need to get an additional High speed HDMI cable since my receiver is only HDR 10 compatible. So glad the X700 has two HDMI out ports.

When 1080p disc have no DV MetaData on it... How can x700 make it Dolby Vision like the truly real DV Discs.

Same question for the HDR10 Disc movies without DV MetaData.

The same way a tv or receiver can upscale a dvd to 1080p or a bluray to 4K.

Does that mean no need to buy DV Disc movies?

Just buy the 1080p version of the movie at lot lower cost.
And let x700 bring it up to DV_____ For ALL the MAGIC found on the real DV Discs.

dynamic metadata :: it's just a tool/mechanism for processing (not magic, just 'necessary functionality')

Dolby Vision :: it's the 'many aspects' (otherwise unavailable) such as end-to-end consistency of the picture quality from capture-to-display/calibration - post production, color & contrast (12-bit encoding, WCG, UHD resolution), including other elements generally both unknown/unrecognized) that manifest collectively as an 'rather obvious' natural/realistic picture quality that otherwise cannot be equaled

No. That's not what it means at all.

While I do not think it makes the image look worse but so far I’m not a fan of calling everything it runs Dolby Vision. I want DV discs to run as DV and HDR10 to run as HDR10

Just buy the DVD then and upscale it to 4K. I think you’re onto something.

Default UBP-X700 Plays DV 4K Blu-rays...But It's All A Bit Of A Mess

Even more clumsy is the fact that if you activate the Dolby Vision mode on the X700, everything you play on the deck is output to your TV behind a Dolby Vision flag. As a result, even standard dynamic range HD Blu-rays and DVDs are presented to your TV as Dolby Vision sources. Which triggers your TV to go into Dolby Vision playback mode, resulting in pictures that look much brighter than they’re supposed to.

Thanks to this inability of the X700 to automatically switch in and out of Dolby Vision mode, you can’t just switch the mode on and leave it at that. You really are going to have to manually keep toggling DV on and off, with all the faff and potential for missing Dolby Vision sources that entails.
