  • Yes, but it's a real pain - you have to go deep into the settings to change it..it's not automatically tagged to DV equipped discs only
For the x700 owners out there, does this mean there's no toggle for DV within a pop-up menu from the remote?

Asking for a friend.

Dual layer m2ts via usb is more important to come closer to the extremely expensive horrible Oppo.

Who says they’re bugs though?

It could be that this was the only way to get DV to work.

No toggle and I don’t know why anyone would expect such a toggle given that such a toggle doesn’t exist for HDR10.

Thanks for the info, and the reason why that would be is HDR10 is not applied to all content unlike the stated behavior of DV (when enabled).

If the setting is found with the other settings for Sony players, it's more than an inconvenience, it's a statement.

Without an easily-accessabile toggle, Sony must believe:
  • DV For Everything: You choose to watch all of your content with DV, regardless of content.
  • DV Only: You only watch DV content with your player.
  • No DV: You don't care about DV and never turn it on.

While Apple was guilty of the same behavior with the launch of the ATV 4K, it was quickly rectified. That was close to nine months ago, and given the advances of DV, it seems as if Sony can't get out of their own way with their implementation of DV.

I don’t disagree that there should be an option such that it will default to HDR10 if the content was mastered in HDR10 and DV for DV.

Of course something to keep in mind is that DV can be disabled when watching an HDR10 source.
It’s not like people are being forced to choose DV.

Having said that it would obviously be better if the player could auto detect

I for one appreciate the option to turn DV off or on, especially at this price point. It's not that hard to do either, just press the settings button and turn it on or off. Right now, you'd have to spend $500 plus for a player with DV.

Auto-detect would be best, but having the the option to turn it on or off with a pop-up menu seems simple enough to implement for the interim.

If the player doesn't auto-detect DV and applies DV to all UHD and 1080p content, yes, you definitely want to keep the option to turn it on or off, preferably with a pop-up menu option.

Its operating like they didn't merge the dynamic range match that works with SDR/HDR10 with DV. Instead it was additional separate on/off function that is really a separate DV forced mode. As others are saying it turns everything to being DV. Thats not a awful thing if done correctly, its just the videophiles here expect the player to automatically match dynamic range for everything and not disable 3D in the process.

I would say a another FW update in the future will fix it, but you have to know Sony fans were quite upset with all this, so its better to have a something then nothing.

Is this the best player you can get for under 200 bucks?

Most likely. Major advantage of this player is a promised Dolby Vision HDR firmware update. I am still waiting for a professional review from Sound and Vision magazine and others to see what their extensive tests has to say.

My TV doesn't have Dolby Vision. I only have the TCL 55S405 55-Inch.

Easily.

If you want a stand-alone with future proof features then this is the one to get.

Xbox One S is another great choice if you do gaming.

However if the TCL S-series is the highest end you plan to go getting a cheaper LG may be a better option.

If you never plan on buying a display with Dolby Vision HDR, the Sony UBP-X800 is a better player since it handles DVD-AUDIO discs and has better build quality. However it is no longer on sale for $149.99 like it was in the 4th quarter of 2017, and it now sales for $299.99 and sometimes $248 plus free shipping until inventory is gone.

The OPPO UDP-203 is my favorite player but the Sony UBP-X800 would be my second choice for the amount of performance for the value (and I have extensive amount of time using the Sony UBP-X800 since a couple of family members own the player).

Here is a good professional review to read regarding the Sony UBP-X800

Well, I do plan on getting a better TV and a better player in 3 or 4 years when everything gets a bit cheaper and better. So I'm looking to get a temporary player basically. I don't care if it has all the apps or not because both my TV and my PS4 have all the apps I need.

anyone with this player with the DV update have success or issues with either the TCL P series or the TCL 6 series playing DV from a UHD movie disc? or any other video compatibility issues with either of those TCL TV's mentioned?

I don't care about the streaming video apps on the player, I use the built ROKU on the TV's for that.

I'm thinking about buying one, but, just want to make sure it's working with those TCL TV's first.

thanks in advance for the response to anyone who owns one of those TCL TV's and chimes in.

I have the x700 and the TCL P605. Had no issue at all updating the x700 for DV and had no display issues with output at all. So far I've been impressed with the update.
