Not a problem. I have no experience with 4K discs, players, etc and I bought this tv mainly for the 3D feature since it was one of the last sets that had it. I swore I wouldn't get into yet another format since I've had just about all of them-VHS, Beta, LD, DVD, etc. but here I am, once again, getting a player for another format.

On the other hand; I like the fact that the X-700 is cheaper and is Dolby Vision capable but it looks like a typical later generation player where they cut corners in build quality. My tv is a couple of years old (LG UH8500) that I think supports Dolby Vision but how desirable is it to have that capability? I want to get one of these players fairly soon before my window of opportunity (Father's Day) closes but I'm no closer to a decision now than I was a couple of weeks back.
The build quality was great on the x800. I loved that aspect and wish they did the same to the x700... With that’s said, I’d say I’d rather have the option of having DV because it makes a huge difference in some movies.

That would be the ideal solution. You guys have me leaning towards the X700.

Why doesn't the x700 have the Dolby Vision logo on its chassis? It does have the DV proprietary chip inside it, right?

A couple weks ago. You go into setting and you have to turn dv on yes. Its in display settings. Be warned it will make tv say everything is dv if you leave it on there is no auto detect i am aware of. The player it self will say its a hdr disc.

Because it wasn't certified by Dolby for DV before its official release and sale to the public. And I agree with that, firmware updates should be for minor tweaks & improvements, not implementing a major feature that should have been finalized before being released for sale.

Having said that, I plan on picking one up. And there is no "DV proprietary chip", Dolby Vision is software based.

I've read on these boards several times that there is a proprietary DV chip that's embedded in hardware that supports DV.

False, DV compatibility in a SoC for example that is DV hardware capable is just the necessary instruction set, along with required processing capability.

In early 2017, Dolby released a software based DV. (and unofficially conducted a PoC on PlatStation 4 platform.)

So I just received this. It works great. The DV thing is weird but I’m already switching disks so an extra button press doesn’t bother me I guess.

I’m really impressed with UHD BR but damn, this is the first time I’ve seen reg BRs upscale and they look great too! Idk how that’s possible. I really noticed how some movies look better than others. Logan didn’t look as crisp as Thor Ragnarok and Fifth Element has a lot of film grain. All in all I’m loving it. I’m surprised BRs can look as crisp as they do on here.

What settings are you using for the reg BR discs? Are you using Auto 1 or Auto 2?

Make sure you have it in Direct mode.

Auto 1. What do those settings mean?

From the manual:

[4K Upscale Setting]
[Auto1]: Outputs 2K (1920 × 1080) video
signals during video playback and 4K video
signals during photo/Network Services/
Miracast playback when connecting to a Sony
4K-compatible equipment.
Outputs 4K video signals when connecting to
a non-Sony 4K-compatible equipment.
This setting does not work for 3D video image
playback.
[Auto2]: Automatically outputs 4K video
signals when you connect a 4K-compatible
equipment.
[Off]: Turns off the function.

From a previous thread and alot eaier to understand.:

Auto1 sends 2k to TV(And thus the TV do upscaling).
Auto2 sends 4K to TV. Thus the Disc Player do the upscaling

I doubt there is any real noticeable difference. My TV does a great job of upscaling, so I have mine set to Auto 1 (default)

I have an X700 coming Thursday. The first thing I do when I buy new electronics is download the user manual PDF to get familiar with the settings. You can get the Sony User Manual here:

Thanks guys. I looked in the manual when I asked that and read it but sometimes forums can expand on the explanation of what it meant. I have a 2018 TCL so I assume auto 2 is what I need. I’m not sure if my tv upscasles.

FHD (1080p) to UHD (2160p) scaling is extremely easy process as it’s the exact 2x2 integer scaling. You won’t be able to tell any differences on modern devices whether the scaling is done on TV or source player.

Probably. And it's probably just a placebo effect that I think my $1100 Sony 850E 65" display does a bit better job of upscaling 1080p BD than my $25 Walmart special LG870.

I prefer to play 1080p BD on my standard Panny BD player and UHD BD on my LG870. My X700 arrives tomorrow, so we'l see . .
