If I get flashing on my new player, I try this hdmi cable. 4k apple tv owners (among others) say its the only cable they found so far to stop with their random flashing

I don’t actually have a 4K TV yet, but when I get one I will see if the UK have the same cable. Thanks. Strange though the way it’s never happened before on my 1080p TV then just happened all of a sudden.

The HDMI por on Apple TV may output a lower voltage signal that may be causing this problem, I've seen this happening before.
Last year I bought a new Samsung 49" 4K HDR set which I connected to a Samsung K-8500 UHD BD player with an old 5 meters Monster Cable HDMI wire and 4K and HDR worked fine. I then changed the UHD BD player to a Sony X-800 and I started having the kind of problems you're describing, maybe worse. An inexpensive 5 meters Amazon Basics HDMI cable cured all the problems, I now get again 4K, HDR and Wide Color Gamut with an HDMI cable that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Give it a try, you can always return it.

Lol that price is ridiculous.

Just get a Certified Monoprice HDMI. $7.
They will work just fine.

Finally got the chance to play another disc and had no issues. Will try a few more and then the same disc over the weekend again. Very strange the way the screen went black for 5-10 seconds on a disc though.

Ignore my above post, was watching another disc tonight and the same happened again. Screen flashed and then went black for 5/10 seconds before coming back on.

I am really, really pissed off with this, please can someone tell if there is a fix? Only had my player a few months!

Hey guys, got a couple questions here: while my questions may be a bit off topic, they are still related to Sony products.

First off, I have a Sony XBR-43X800D for my 4k / HDR compatible display. For my Player, I have the UBP-X800 from Sony. While Dolby Vision compatibility won't come into play here, until I upgrade the TV, I am curious about the following:

While, I've been told that in order to notice 4K over 1080p a TV of 65", or greater is required.

When it comes to HDR10 vs SDR, is a smaller screen suitable to show off the color differences? I ask because I've had mixed results here, some HDR stuff is noticeable, while other content has very little difference over the standard Blu-ray version. So, it's given me mixed feelings over the last couple years about wanting to continue with 4K, or go back to standard Blu-ray.

The other factors that play into consideration here are as follows:
1. I don't have 20/20 vision, but still good enough to tell the differences between HD, and SD, and the color tones between HDR, vs SDR when pronounced.
2, I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, so no dedicated room for a theater setup limiting TV size to about 50", or 55, in a pinch (if it has a center stand) In the Bedroom, I have a 48" TV, but it's HD only, and the 5" difference doesn't seem to make a huge difference in picture detail.

The last question is, regarding the player which this thread is targeted toward. I have an extended warranty from Best Buy for the X800, if something happens under Warranty, should I get the X700, or should I get something different at this point? My standard Blu-ray player in the bedroom is a Sony BDP-S6700, and it's been a good player.

Thanks in advanced for any feedback.

By the way, the above reasons, are mainly why I haven't put a lot of work into a home theater setup. This environment, isn't practical for it, so for Audio, I went with Vizio sound bars with a wireless Sub, and rear speakers, so I do have 5.1 audio, and The can receive PCM 5.1 if the player, or streamer sends the decoded audio as PCM. For bitstream they can do DD+, and standard DD, and DTS 5.1. So at this point really just looking for ways to get the best experience possible in this environment, and then worry about the more involved setup when I'm in a place where it's more practical.

Haven't had any issues with the X700 as of yet. I've only had it a couple weeks though.

Had mine 3 months now, today it totally froze 1.47 in Fury, had to turn off on remote, and then on again by remote, film resumed from freezing point, so, annoying, but.... I'll live, if this happens from time to time, so be it....

Hmm, planning on buying this when I finally upgrade, reading this thread it sounds like a piece of junk lol

Anyone had it for a good while and not experienced immersion breaking problems?

I’ve had it since release and haven’t had any problems...yet. I had a lot of the problems discussed here but with a few X800’s. So far the X700 has been solid with no freezes. Not sure what Sony’s issues are with their players lately but I made sure to get the warranty and if it does crap out I may just pony up for the Panny 820 but for now and the price of this player it has been great.

Yeah I'll probably look at buying it with a good warranty and from a retailer with good customer service, not taking any chances with this one.

I wonder if this why Sony insanely ditched the UHD disc player from the PS4 Pro, because they haven't quite mastered a budget 4k player yet and didn't want crappy 4k disc playing hampering the PS4 Pro sales.

I bought this player on june 23 this year and watched over 30 movies, blu-ray and UHD, without any problems... so far.
I’ve got the latest firmware and use a HDMI 2.0 cable

Not sure they were ever bothered about disc playback in the PS4 to begin with, even the DVD/BD playback seems like an afterthought rather than a key feature.

What output (4k or auto) do you guys recommend? Also, should I turn off Deep Color? I'm , as of yet, still woefully ignorant in these matters.

So is anyone else noticing some video processing problems in playback?

I put on Spirited Away earlier and I noticed some problems when I looked a bit closer. To sum it up, there was a bit of black crush, “smearing” where moving dark images left a visible afterimage/trail, and a very slight green tint.

The smearing was the most obvious issue at first. In any dark scenes where the camera was panning, darker parts of the image would faintly remain on the screen, leaving a sort of trail of an afterimage. I used the “step” function to go forward frame-by-frame, and there was a holdover of dark objects from every previous frame which made them blurry, this was the same whenever I paused the image during a panning shot, I could see a ghost of the previous frames.

However, when I “stepped back” using pause + rewind, these trails and blurs vanished, the darks in the image got slightly brighter and it was overall slightly less green. If I continued to step back there was no blur or ghosting at all, but if I hit play or “stepped forward” it would return again, as well as the image getting slightly darker and greener.

I discovered that if I pressed “home” on the remote control during the movie, effectively stopping the disc, then returned back to the film where the disc would start again and pick up from where I left off, all the problems had vanished. It looked like it did when I used the step backwards button. There was no ghosting or smears in video or when I went frame-by-frame.

If I put in another film it would revert back to the weird ghosting and dark/greenish tint, I tried out Star Wars VII, and any time I paused and “stepped back” the image would again get brighter and less green, but with live action content I now noticed there was more grain which added more depth and clarity. My guess is that the smearing issue before kind of fudged the grain so it would look smoother. The only problem with this is that in Disney blu-rays if I go to “home” on the player I can only start the disc from the beginning again, not from exactly where I picked up, so there was no fix for this issue here.

I wired up my previous Panasonic Blu-ray player through the same inputs and there were none of the same problems. No ghost effects, less black crush, and a lot more grain. Only problem is it doesn’t play UHDs

Can anyone else confirm that these errors are on other models? Put in a disc and play the film, pick a dark/greyish scene, pause then observe any differences when you “step back”, the image should get slightly brighter, redder, and in the case of some live action films slightly sharper.
