Default Sony :: UBP-X700 :: (no) Dolby Vision 'out of the box'

English? :: not a problem (you do very well indeed)

Dolby Vision (out of the box) :: quite disappointing and unexpected

Sony (CES 2018) :: Sony clearly indicated otherwise (it makes no sense)

accuracy of your information :: i do not question it (at all) - i was waiting for some kind of confirmation by those with the actual players

waiting? :: makes sense, however my expectation, based on the build/design quality of the previous UBP-X800, is that the build/design quality will be impressive (i look forward to purchasing) - that Sony indicated (CES 2018) that it has the 'Dolby Vision chipset' eventually having Dolby Vision is a given, which i am looking forward to also

The x700 has been released in the UK and someone over on another forum has one. It's NOT dv ready out of the box (he tried Cabin in the Woods, a DV disc and it just played back in HDR10).

I'm looking at getting one, I need a UHD player and I want a dv capable one, even if that's down the line. I'm just waiting on reviews to see how 'budget' the x700 is.

BTW there really isn't any mention of any HDR in the EU edition of the Sony UBP-X700 user manual. see here. (PDF).

sadly, i agree, completely irresponsible of Sony (very bad business practices)

clearly, Sony cannot be trusted to accurately/fairly represent their products (they must have considered marketing hype to be of value, regardless the misrepresentation of their products)

how is anyone to believe (without 'absolute' proof - meaning acquiring and testing oneself)?

'weasel word' it is, plain and simple

i, am quite disappointed with Sony at this point in time

Dolby Vision 'out of the box' means Dolby Vision 'out of the box' (that it will - without firmware update required - play Dolby Vision discs)
apparently it does not :: any further qualifiers are nonsense (it either plays out of the box or not - it does not) :: therefore it's not Dolby Vision 'out of the box' as Sony indicated at CES 2018 for several days at their booth (even on video on this forum)

Support out of the box is NOT EQUAL to "enabled" or "activated" out of the box. So I think "support" is a weasel word for "we can support it once the FW update makes it enabled".

That's just my take, but the very first time I read this it was my immediate reaction to their words.

EDIT: EXCEPT if Sony does not sell this model until mid-year 2018 the DoVi feature may work out of the box because it does not hit market until that late in the year. If this hits retail in say March/ Spring, DoVi probably won't be enabled IMHO. :END EDIT

I was dead on with my original guess.
Now by Black Friday 2018 check for a sale price of approximately $124.99

And @ Christmas 2018 I'll give one to everyone in my family...$99 ...There are five and half of us.

In the manual on page 17 and 19 ... HDR ... Setting

* In the Oppo 203/205 manual, there is no mention of Netflix, YouTube and HDCD.

Thanks for pointing that out.

That was pointed out to me.
Because it doesn't have built in streaming, and also because HDCD support is dead now.

Panasonic will have two new UHD/HDR BD payers debut in July, but only the higher-end UB820 will support DV and it's planned to be DV ready out of the box. In fact, the UB820 will be the 1st true "universal" UHD BD player supporting HDR10, HDR10+ and DV.

My company is one of the very few Panasonic dealers and I'll be bring in the 1st allotment.

I am confident that Sony's X700 BD player will be DV capable. It will be an upgrade that is scheduled for April. The X700 will launch in February and at launch it will only decode HDR10.

Yes there isn't that much about HDR John.

The rest of my post was good gesture, humor return. I don't blame Oppo too much to be unique and kiss Netflix goodbye. HDCD was sad though, I did cry.
Anyway it don't really matter now I'm using a 205 and 103 and 800.
But only the 103 plays my over 600 HDCD discs.

The 700 is the holy trail of Dolby Vision on a budget. And it still retains Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, Amazon, Opera, ...all that jazz. I know, Oppo boys won't dare to go there, but my little sister she ain't no Oppo boy.

Even if the Sony 700 or 800 decoded HDCD, your amp or avr would have to also be able to decode, because neither Sony has analog out.

True, only the X1000ES could have been.
Denon and Marantz have a bunch of AV receivers and pre/pros with the HDCD decoder inside. If you have one of those it don't matter anymore which disc spinner you're using.

Rotel receivers and SSPs too.

I think that just means when HDR isn't supported by your TV it converts the picture as all other UHD players do.

You see your touching on part of the truth, which is the UBP-X700 is a budget model, you really think this is all Sony will do for 2018?

The marketplace likes more options for consumers, but yes the water is too shallow.

Correct the source uses a data stream (EDID) from the display to understand its capabilities and either output HDR or perform a HDR to SDR conversion, however as written the term HDMI-SINK is pretty odd choice for the average consumer to understand against that thought.
Just take a look at this TI document as a basis of what I am getting at.
