IDK but me thinks unless the player says Dolby Vision your not getting real deal DV, regardless of whether the TV is in the picture mode or not.

BUT, I'm no expert like some here!

Thanks; I'll look again... might be it just won't work with my chip-modded player (if so, "bugger", as that's why I got the X700 knowing that the DV update was due)

Annoyingly I can't tell if my TV is in DV mode (ie being *told* it's a DV signal being fed in, whether it is or not) as I can't find that in the TV manual either (yes the TV is DV capable - I'm not quite that thick!)

My tv has a notification for DV you can turn on/off in settings, a DV logo comes up in top right corner after movie loads. Also, in picture settings it says Dolby Vision

I agree. My question isn't if I am getting DV by leaving it on. Obviously if the disc doesnt have DV, then I am not getting DV, but I am curious if leaving it on for hdr10 or hdr10+ discs, am I messing up the HDR picture, or is it allowing the HDR signal through without messing with it. To my eye, i dont see a difference, so therefore I leave it on for all UHD discs, but I am curious if I should indeed be turning it off for anything that is not native DV because it might be displaying the picture incorrectly. I do turn it off for standard blu ray and dvd.

It probably depends on the display. If I leave it on, I am getting DV. Though I don't think it looks as good as when playing reg HDR10 content

Hey guys, quick question. I have an xbox one s that I purchased just so I could have a 4k player (at the time it was the only 4k player in my country) and while I think it works fine most of the time, it's always had some audio sync issues...sometimes it fixes just by rewinding or fast forwarding a bit and if that's just not working, restarting the console might do it. Now I saw this player available in a store and I'm considering getting it. What do you guys think? Is it better to get this, a dedicated player or stick with the xbox one s? do dedicated player get audio sync issues too?

thanks a lot!

yes :: changing the picture mode from what is indicated proper, 'will always mess up the picture', whether you're noticing it or not
  • yes :: you should indeed be turning it off for anything that is not native DV because it will be displaying the picture incorrectly
  • "leaving it on for hdr10 or hdr10+ discs, is messing up the HDR picture,"
  • whether an improperly displayed/selected picture is desirable is a personal choice, whether right or wrong
  • personally, i would not expect an incorrect picture as displayed 'to be desirable'
  • Dolby Vision should 'only be on/selected when content is in Dolby Vision
  • non-Dolby Vision content (HD/UHD) should not be viewed with Dolby Vision selected 'on in the player'

I bought this recently and have had zero problems with playing BD and UHD discs. DVD is another story though. Every one has locked up causing me to have to unplug the player from the power cord and replug it in. All have been FOX titles so that might have something to do with it. Also when playing 4:3 ratio DVDs there is a constant ugly green line on the left side where the picture starts from the black bar.

I don’t know the price difference between the x700 vs x800m2 in your country. But if you can pay a bit more, get the X800m2. It has a far better built quality.

the only 4k player I've seen here other than the xbox one s is the X700 so unfortunately can't do that. Other than built quality, is it a better player? like PQ, and all that?

It’s the same. I just had bad experience with failure of recognizing disc and freezing on the X700.

I have a Samsung UBD-M7500 (the cheap 4K player they were giving away with Samsung TVs for a while) and I bought the X700 to replace it because of the Dolby Vision. I resold it in a month's time because I hated it so much. Upscale quality is garbage comparatively to the Samsung, and Dolby Vision with my TV (albeit a cheap Black Friday Vizio) was nothing but issues. No audio issues, but I would have weird glitches where the picture would stutter from one shot to another on cuts when playing any Dolby Vision title. It also has a really poor UI and streaming platform. My cheap Samsung 4K player seems like a luxury item in comparison. Now I just stream Dolby Vision titles from VUDU in the TV until I find another Dolby Vision player I can afford.

thank you guys! I read somewhere that it freezes kind of regularly and it had me a bit worried. I guess I'm just gonna stick with the xbox one s for now

I don’t know whether it has DV or not if that’s important to you. I only one client had it about 2 years ago. WalMart Canada never had it, he bought it from BestBuy Canada. It was never even on their website. Reportedly (by someone on this forum) that it was Panasonic based.

I must be lucky; the majority of discs I play are DVD (lots of TV, especially classic stuff, isn't even available in BD especially in the UK) and I've never had a lock up like that; maybe the occasional disc clean required but that's it - just like with all discs - and 4:3 (all my classic TV) plays without any image glitches.
As an aside, and despite criticisms I've seen here, I find with a decently authored DVDs, especially recent material, the upscaling by the player to 4K (though people say leave it to the TV, I found this player semed to give a better image) is pushing DVD *towards* Blu-ray quality in some cases (though obviously still *recognisable* as SD).

You *should* turn it off; obviously if you can't see any difference it's not a big deal but there is one as the TV will be treating/decoding the HDR10/HDR10+ as DV which is incorrect and will give a incorrectly decoded image...

...then again some people leave it on DV for all SDR material too as they like the brighter (totally incorrect, but to *them* preferred) colours it gives... FWIW if *I* wanted brighter colours on SDR I'd adjust the TV settings for the colour balance rather than use the incorrect decode but everyone has the right to do what they want with their own set up.
Even those who stretch 4:3 to fill a 1.78:1 screen can if they prefer it; it's technically wrong and don't expect me to watch it with you but if you want to because you don't like black bars and it's "wasting part of the TV picture you've paid for", I can advise it's technically incorrect but I cannot tell you what you like...

Tbh, I've never really had any issues with my X-700, I think I only had 1 disc freeze, otherwise it's played everything I've thrown at it. Connecting my external via the USB port also lets me play a ton of movies I have saved on my harddrive and it upscales them too. I guess I've been lucky.

I found the upscaling to be amazing, but that's also likely my TV as I had a Samsung 4K player before I got the X-700 (so I could take advantage of my TV's DV capabilities) and found the upscaling quality to be the same. If you have a decent enough 4K TV though, it'll upscale everything anyway so you don't really have to worry about your UHD player doing a bad job of it.
