Some players can be region switchable (supposedly the Panasonic can do that but I never tried it) but the 4K discs are in nature have no region code.
There's a trick to play BD's from another regions on Panasonic BD/UHD BD players, that is load the disc and press the Main Menu button repeatedly, this should bypass the region code.
I've tried that on my Panasonic DP-UB420 and of all the region A BD's I have (around 20 titles) only Criterion's The Game plays, with the rest I get the wrong region message.

I plan on watching that in the next few days. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I was digging it and at about an hour in it began freezing. Tried multiple discs and it’s freezing up with those too.

I decided to unplug it overnight and try again today. Annoying issue.

This thing will not stop freezing/not load. Did a hard factory reset. Unplugged it multiple times. Tried 5-6 different titles (Blus/UHD) No avail.

Decided to register it and contact Sony. They sent me a prepaid shipping label. Shipping it out tomorrow.

Yeah, I gave up my X700 a long time ago. Nothing but freezing. Replaced at the store once, the problem came back, replaced by Sony, I didn’t bother and sold it right away.

I plan on giving this replacement a shot, but if any more occurrences of freezing. I'll get rid of it for another brand.

Just wondering, how does this player stack up against the Panasonic DP-UBP 820 and the newer Sony UBP-X800m2? I am looking at getting a region free player, either Sony ones from 220-Electronics, now that the X800m2 is available from their site, or if I should get the Panasonic and do the regionfreedom.com one.

Since people seem to be having issues with Dolby Vision playback on Sony Z9D with the X800M2 (which is a shame as the build quality is so much better and the X700 isn't as well received overall), I think I'll hang on to my X800 but perhaps add the X700 into the mix solely for DV discs. That should help expand the life of the player as well. Given that some have issues with the longevity of this player I think this might be a happy medium for me. It's inexpensive enough as well should anything ever happen to the player.

It seems somewhat humorous to me but I'm planning to use three different Blu-ray players in my home theater set-up: a Oppo 103D (for Darbee implenetation) on Blu-ray/Blu-ray 3D, Sony X800 for 4K HDR 10 discs, and Sony X700 for DV discs.

Since there's no auto switching for DV playback (and "enhanced mode" aka 4K mode needs to be turned off for 3D titles on the Z9D) having all three players set to different HDMI settings/ports should also make playback a little easier.

Anyone else do something similar?

Just keep in mind some people are having issues with LLDV on the Sony X800M2. However, these issues are not present on the Sony X700.

A firmware update could (theoretically) fix the issue on the X800M2 but it might never happen. Who knows.

So the X700 might be the safest route then? It's $100 cheaper then the X800m2 on 220-electronics. If it wasn't for Dolby Vision, I wouldn't even be looking into one of these players

I think so. Unfortunately, for that matter. Given that the X800M2 has a much better build quality and would last longer as a player.

If switching off/on DV is that big of an issue, just leave it off. Most dics don't have it anyway.

It's more to do with how Dolby Vision is integrated into certain players. Since Dolby and the manufacturers have to work together for support and updates, many players don't have this well integrated (even if listed as a feature).

The Oppo 203 is the best player available on the market in that regard (with auto switching too) but implementation on the Oppo with the Sony Z9D is not as good as it could be. The best player for Dolby Vision playback with this TV is the Sony X700.

I wouldn't just switch it off altogether. It would be nice to see Dolby Vision titles displayed properly.
