What, I can't keep an eye on it whilst trashing Sony at the same time? And who says I don't have an interest in the player?
![]() As for the 103/5D, pur-leaze. The D revision was specifically to add a feature that they thought was of genuine usefulness, not simply so they could play "change my player every 12 months" like most other manufacturers do. In case you need a history lesson there was a good three years between the D revision and the UHD player. OPPO don't play that game because they like to make sure that they don't have to. Sure, if their custom tweaked MediaTek chip isn't up to the task of being retrofitted with this new DV profile then they'll have a simple choice to update the 203 to a new model or to carry on regardless, if it's the latter then I'm not dropping the cash on another OPPO, I'll just get the X700. So as I said, I'll be keeping an eye on this here thread. |

Reason being, all threads do nowadays os turn into a fanboy dick size fest. If you aren't gonna buy the thing, or need to tell everyone how good your other toy is, move on.
I have a 203, a UB900, an X800 and now a X700. Touch me. I dont run around into every thread talking up my purty toy. As far as Oppo, the 203 is such a joy, 13 months and people still have playback issues, and they cant even get HDR to SDR right. Panny figured that out right out of the gate. Dont tell Oppo that though. I can do this all day long because I own a lot of gear, but I dont want to, because once again this is the X700 thread. Matter of fact, I had to go thru 3 203's to find one as reliable as my X800. Wanna keep going? |

Dude, who shit in your cereal? I didn't come in here to throw my OPPO around, I don't wear it like a damned badge of honour (which I think some people would literally do if they could) and note that I'm not so ****ing vain as to have all my gear listed in my sig like most eveybody else.
I just thought I'd take Bob's line of reasoning - which did, y'know, actually MENTION the OPPO before I did - and apply my own spin on it, which is to say (in a semi-jokey way, hence the smilie) that if you got an OPPO already then that OPPO-equalling $300+$250 spend to get a setup that properly plays DV into a Sony TV doesn't quite work. Funny time! ---> ![]() In case you can't decipher that subtext, given your bit about people needing to tell people about how good their kit is, I'm up in here precisely because I'm just not sure that the OPPO will be successfully updated with this new profile, and so I'm keeping my options open. Sheesh. |

What I don't get is the "I don't run around into every thread talking up my purty toy" bit of snark, folks can run a search on my posts if they like but you won't usually find me mentioning The Player That Must Not Be Named Lest It Trigger Elway without any kind of prior context. Several of them are about the actual PROBLEMS that I've had with the player. Jesus, that got weird.

The magic right here is that Dolby Vision is becoming more affordable to the masses, with Sony UBP-X700 4K UHD Blu-ray player. The Oppo's lead is just getting less lead. But their players keep improving too. We all win. |

Geoff, you, I and the majority from the rest of us we just ride the waves. CES is nice for the presenters, the ladies. ...And like you said, the special sauce...8K, 10,000 Nits, Dolby Vision Demo, 146" The Wall, ...all that dream jazz and audio/video dealers rush from manufacturers show. ...The entire buzz light flow. There is one common thing that keeps reoccurring on all audio/video forums: ME (my own system). ...From the most frugal ones to the most elaborated ones. Anywhere between we fit. Some of us we fly super fast, we are making space already for that Sony 8K TV powered by laser light sabers...Star Wars inside the power supply. Others we are moving real slow, like DVD is still the latest tech to use with the new 4K TVs. We are just getting rid of our 27" Sony Trinitron and ready to buy a brand new 32" Sony 4K TV. And increase of five inches in diagonal should be a much more immersive CNN and FOX news experience, with the announcer's larger faces, real life size. Today is January 22, 2018. The Sony X700 is supposed to be Dolby Vision ready (firmware updated) in about roughly three months...sometimes in April. That's quicker than summer. Are we going to be able to sleep? If not take me with you aboard a spaceship towards another galaxy. |

You, from all the people I know is an open individual without restriction. Am I right. * I'm up-to-date now; I learned great stuff from you Elway, from Geoff, from Robert, from Penton, from John, from many more, from everyone. I went to a friend's house recently, they asked me what was my resolution for this year. I said peace, stress-free. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 01-23-2018 at 02:10 AM. |

as promised here are some photos from the unit I received today. I am in the process of hooking it up and testing it out so I have not had a chance to do much yet but wanted to get these out there.
and for anyone asking there is no mention of dolby vision on the box or in the manual at all. the body of the unit is metal with the only plastic being the very front glossy part. The controller is comes is very tiny and horrible ![]() Last edited by masc360; 01-23-2018 at 05:07 PM. |

You have a bad S790 player. I've had my BDP-S790 since early 2013; it's been rock solid and quiet. My reason for replacing it, is I'm simply looking for new features that weren't available then.

A couple of notes after using the player last night.
The remote really really sucks, the buttons are so squishy it feels very hard to navigate menus or typing anything in. The unit is very quiet during playback I was kinda surprised with how small and light it was that it was so quiet. the software and overlay is exactly the same as the X800 and playback quality was the same between the two. Amazon does stream HDR, I was not able to try Netflix or Vudu but i will try later tonight. |

Will Netflix App do Dolby Digital + or will it just to old DD 5.1. So no Atmos Lossy or otherwise. Will Vudu app do only 1080p(known as HDX). Or will it do 4K. What about HDR, DV. |

The X800 is a tank in comparison (I dropped mine on the floor when I first got it and smashed the panel on the side, it works 100% fine) and is very quiet indeed, it's also a faster operator than the first gen UHD Panasonics. The X700 however looks just like every other one of the plastic $50 POS players out there, but I'll buy the damned thing if I have to (don't mention the O word!). |
