I probably found that a bit funnier than I should have, but I have a very simple sense of humor.

Is there any chance someone can help me out with this machine. Recently acquired the 4k player, plugged into the new 4k tv with the required hdmi cable. I've also got my older home theatre system. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to like the 7.1 audio tracks.

The video is fine, looks fantastic in fact. But the audio on Blade Runner, Mission Impossible Rogue Nation and a couple of others have had stuttering audio, distortion or drop outs. I assume they're not compatible with the older home theatre but I'm a bit of a noob at these things. Blade Runner sounds wonderful on the other languages in 5.1, but the English 7.1 just wants to make it die.

Been looking to see if I can downmix the audio, but it doesn't seem to be the case. It's 7.1 or stereo. I'm a bit confused, stressed out and stuck lol. Help?

Are you running the signal through the HT receiver? You're better off using both HDMI outputs and sending the audio from the secondary HDMI separately.

Yeah, I did think of that. It's a model with a built in player, it's only got one HDMI slot. Being a good player, I never actually considered the inputs when I bought the 4k. I've got it hooked up to the TV via optical and the hdmi uses arc. Other than that, there's no secondary direct HDMI input for the 4k to hook into.

6.1 and 5.1 film soundtracks play beautifully, it's only the 7.1 Dolby Atmos things that have issues. I feel like an useless idiot lol.

Edit: I literally tried everything and it just wasn't having it. I'm guessing the fact I can't directly link it to the home theatre is the issue. I took down my xbox and plugged it in. Plays 4k perfectly fine so I'm refunding this 4k player and sticking with the console haha.

If it's that old, can it even pass-through 4K? You're probably getting downscaled video through that thing. Hell, mine has 4 HDMI inputs and it doesn't even do DTS-HD or TrueHD processing, let alone 4K pass-through. You'd be better off getting an HDMI splitter and using it for audio only.

If it's the audio we're talking about, it seems to do it perfectly fine with the xbox. It's definitely playing at 4k visually. I'm going to assume the home theatre thingy and the Sony player were just not compatible. Playing Blade Runner 4k disc is amazing. Looks and sounds incredible.

I'll just use this experience as an excuse to get something bigger and better.

Good to see Sony's entry level 4K Blu-ray player get a firmware update also. It should be mentioned that on 8-23-2021 all Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players received a firmware update that can be installed by ethernet, WI-FI, or USB stick. However ethernet is the fastest and most reliable method to install the firmware update.

Do you know if this update fixes the issue where an over 2 hours films get stuck and you have to do some tricks to finish the film?

Your player might need a factory reset to clear up the problem or repair. I know the Sony UBP-X700 is a entry level 4K player, but that is not normal for movies to get stuck after 2 hours. My family members 4 year old year 2017 Sony UBP-X800 players have been flawless with no problems when playing optical discs.

It's usually to do with BD100 4k disks and the change to the third layer. A lot of people have this problem. My player freezes on 99% of triple layer disks and have discovered that it seems to be an overheating problem. I took the top off my player and tried a small USB fan trained on the heatsink. Ever since, I've had no problems. After this update, I have tried three or four BD100 4k's without the fan and have not had a freeze yet! Need to play a few more disks.
Don't know if it's a fluke

Thanks, as you mentioned this is an issue that has been shared by many users. It’s the first time I read a more clear reason for this. As I finally got my Dawn of The Dead box set over the weekend, I saw the Argento cut with no issues, will try the Theatrical over the long weekend, and then allow the firmware update and see if I get lucky, but I’ll also take in account the overheating. Thanks again!

Someone on another forum still has the freezing issue after the update. I ended up returning my x700 because of this fault and replaced it with a Panasonic 450 which has been ok. I tried lifting the X700 up on rubber feet to help cool it, cleaning discs before playing etc. Would be fine for several BD100 films and then the odd one would be a nightmare and I would have to finish the film watching the blu ray. Considering I’d bought a multi region X700 for £300 I really wasn’t happy. The discs that froze on the Sony have been okay when I tried them on the Panasonic.

I have 12 BD-100 UHDs and have had issues with Interstellar, Ready Player One, and Mortal Engines on my UBP-X700.

Interstellar froze about halfway in but I was able to restart it and resume with no other problems. I played it again a few days ago and didn't see that issue again.

With Ready Player One the movie basically skipped for about a minute and then continued afterwards like normal.

My Mortal Engines disc was purchased used so it may have been related to that but there was a stretch of maybe 10 minutes near the end that was unwatchable so I had to skip over it. The picture was basically frozen but the player still responded at least. I will play it again soon to see if I have the same problem but I didn't notice any blemishes or damage on the disc.

My copy of Pitch Black (Arrow UHD) froze up at some point in the back half of the movie, and that's apparently a BD-50.

No guarantees in the fickle world of 4K UHD players, but if you subscribe to the theory that metal casing is better than plastic with regard to overheating, then the UBP-X800 may off more relief from freezing.

If one wants Dolby Vision support, then UBP-X800M2. It has similar metal build of the UBP-X800.

Well Mortal Engines just played a second time without any problems, so I'm not sure what went wrong the first time.

I haven't had any freezes yet. I just wish the player would detect Dolby Vision automatically. Few days ago I forgot it on and watched Hollow Man on normal Blu-ray. I later noticed that I had left it on. No wonder why the colors looked a bit odd.
