I didn't realize that motion is still such an issue, and these folks allege that having added HDR can make motion even harder to get right (I did not understand why, exactly).

Anyway, I posted this in the display tech thread but wanted to post here, too, as this one is way more active. Stop the FOMO is hosting a panel discussion with the folks at TrueCut, which addresses motion and motion issues with HDR content.

You’re welcome . It can be a double edged sword though, as the more of being in the know….the more one realizes just how much one really doesn’t know.

not only Dominic ^ , but others, albeit on a less intellectual and more individualized level are also interested in the human visual system and what it can and can’t do, in this case by training one’s vision with multiple object tracking, etc. for Trent Alexander-Arnold

Not everyone has the work ethnic or skill set of Trent; however, if you’ve got a prodigy of whichever sport in your family, this is the man to get in touch with if you want to try to have them get even better at it and they are motivated to the vision pyramid concept - https://www.sloansportsconference.co...dr-daniel-laby

one interesting about Wanda Vision was that it was the first movie, as far as I know, in which all the visual effects and VFX vendors worked in HDR from the get-go, not as per usual routine of vfx working in SDR and transforming into HDR later. So, the entire pipeline was in HDR, not just on set and in final grading.

Back in early spring of 2012, Dolby submitted the PQ curve for an EOTF based upon human perception for use with UHDTV to the respective ITU working party (the same group responsible for producing the recently released milestone ITU-R BT.2100). Anyway, during the discussions in that particular spring meeting, committee members expressed much skepticism about the value or need for having a TV capable of higher brightness and deeper black levels. The working party did not accept this objective based proposal (containing measurements, numbers, graphs) partly because there was not an appreciation that increased dynamic range would have value in a new TV system and partly because it was too new (visionary/revolutionary).

Soooo, 6 months later, Dolby provided another input document to the working party, this time which contained and described the subjective test results for viewer preference for white and black light levels. There were 34 study participants (among other things, who were classified into 3 age groups in order to approximate age-related effects of the human visual system <- a detail which I don't think has been mentioned in any of the online SMPTE presentations available to the public).

This later proposal was accepted and voilà….years later, we are where we are today.

b.t.w. the LUT created for Nobody by Walter was heavy being at a minimum 2/3s to a full stop darker in an attempt to enrich the coloring, which obliged the DP to light the dark areas of scenes more so than he’d typically done for other motion pictures.

^ A quirk of our young (compared to you blokes) nation’s history - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football

Doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the ignorance (to the nuances of the sport) and biased over hype by Americans who announce the U.S. National Team matches, like last night. True patriots (USA) don't need such nonsense to support the team and the sport. I do wish the broadcast had been in HDR like other live sports – https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=de...tWQzs#t=41m43s
; nevertheless, it was really exciting to watch if you tuned out the announcing and cool that Claudio‘s young teenage son Gio, who b.t.w., is named after Claudio’s former Glasgow Rangers teammate Giovanni van Bronckhorst scored a goal for us.
