If I am interested enough in what I stream, I will buy the BD. I, and tens of millions of others, don't need to only watch content in BD, especially since so much isn't even in BD. And NetFlix streams DD+ not 2.0. HUGE difference. And you have no right to dictate what kind of player anyone needs to own. That would be like me saying you have no right to subscribe to any TV services since you only watch your 2 rented BDs at a time.
I have OTA broadcasts, so? What does that have to do with watching true 1080p quality(not compressed), lossless audio, AND all the extra features...none, of which, I can get through Netflix streaming.
As for your mail arguement...as I said I've got over 80 movies in my queue....mail problem solved! If I need the movie right away, I can always buy it.

Divulging in streaming tech is only encouraging its prosperity. Films lose their appeal to me when the background suddenly resembles pixel camouflage.

You're thinking YouTube, not NetFlix. And so what if it encourages its prosperity? That only means the selection and quality will get better, something EVERYONE who isn't a fanboy wants. I'm looking for NetFlix to continue to evolve, next month they will start streaming their own original series. And it has its niche that BD can't fill. For instance, you can't take a BD with you on your phone, but you can take NetFlix. Your irrational hate of streaming is ridiculous. Its like you fear that when it looks as good as BD they will stop making them, which probably won't happen any time soon.

Slick, my hatred of streaming would change if they suddenly offered really high quality. The problem is i do not think that will ever happen.

I admit the convenience and portability is a bonus for many. But the threat, and my biggest fear, is my love of films would be destroyed forever if, in future, we can only watch films on mobile phones. It could happen in my life time. Tablets and ultrabooks or whatever (if in nice HD) i could just about deal with (as they have capacity to be decent/varying sizes and maybe even one day support 4k.) i am a little surprised Slick, you are not wary of such an outcome. Your equipment suggests you love many forms of viewing. I have tried watching stuff on my ipod touch and i find it hard. All this streaming tech is heading in that direction (movies on phone) and that would end things AFAIAC.

In a world where tv's are ever growing in size and decreasing in price... and HT equipment more popular than ever... WHAT in the world would make you fear a time when we can only watch films on our phones? That's absolutely laughable!

Portable devices and streaming are merely OPTIONS in our vast entertainment world. Your fear of them taking over the world is hardly rational.

Younger generation who are obsessed with their phones. I am only 28. What is to say in 10-15 years that generation are so obsessed with their phones that they even consume movies (every movie) that way? The industry may just scrap big tvs all together if the demand is no longer there. Tablets may be considered big screen then!

Seeing as how the demand has done nothing but grow... you still have no basis for that irrational fear.

Well if you are only 28, that explains much. You haven't seen TV evolve to where it is from small 19-21" black and white sets, with only 3 channels available via an antenna for decade after decade until change slowly trickled in. Streaming is exactly the same thing, its not going to be the most amazing product ever offered overnight, this early in its development. That being said, going in just a few years from nothing offered streaming to 1080p DD+ is multitudes faster than the changes to broadcast TV.

You can't be ready to jump on streaming when it offers BD quality but against it during the time its growing toward that. That is ridiculous. Did you not own a TV or a DVD player because you were holding out for 1080p? Of course not. Same with streaming and on top of that you repeatedly understate the quality. Millions upon millions haven't signed up to watch garbage. Its HD is at least as good as satellite TV and respected sources like CNET has said so while for the most part, depending on the source, the SD is DVD quality. So if your statement about you will be for it when it gets to BD quality is true, stop knocking it now during its development because that makes no sense. Otherwise you come across as just irrational and against technological progress.

yes, but once people accept the quality, where is the incentive to eventually match bluray?

Sigh. If that were true, why do you think NetFlix and other streaming outlets start offering HD and 5.1 and not just continue to churn out SD mono or Dolby 2.0. NetFlix continually is improving its quality, not being satisfied with just status quo. Did you not read the announcements in 2010 when they started offering 1080p? Come on dude, this isn't the case, streaming continues to get better, the quality hasn't been stagnant at all.

Where did it go? Those who prefer CD's can get them. Those who prefer high quality lossless digital downloads can get them. Those who prefer smaller more portable MP3's can get them. Hell... even those who prefer vinyl can still get many new releases on vinyl.

You are odd, I'll give you that. And you get out of the music industry what you want. You want lower quality mp3s or higher quality mp3s with high vbr or CD or HD digital formats like flacc, its all available. Its about choice and convenience. Its up to the individual if you are going for quality or quantity or a combination of both. You can't have the same amount of music on a HDD in flacc vs mp3 now can you?

maybe you two are right. but i can't get my head around people not wanting to watch their movies in the best possible way, even blind buying if they are wealthy enough. Especially if they have a good setup.

Yes, wouldn't want it any other way.

I love watching a great movie on my best set up... or on my second place bedroom set up... or even on my ipad when the situation arises. There's no reason at all I have to pick just one. That's what variety, options and choice are all about.

Imagine watching Avatar on a Ipad for example! Or on Netflix for that matter. I certainly hope the choice remains for high end viewing for decades to come.

For one thing, its not their movie. No ownership involved. Now if you said, I can't get my head around someone with an HD setup buying DVDs while the movie is offered in BD, that would be rational.

The ipad has amazing video quality. I imagine watching Avatar on an ipad during a long flight or road trip would be pretty darned AWESOME!
