Great entertainment value. Looking forward to Star Wars Episode VII on BD!
Heck I might add it to my Netflix blu-ray queue when it becomes available.

I love closing out a calendar year: All the naysayers "projections" get moved back another year. Quite amusing indeed.

Netflix next proposal is to have movies streaming the day they release in theaters. Talk about saving money on bad blind buys and movie tickets.

Netflix's last profit statement proves DVD by Mail on the way out. Postal increase in Jan might be the last straw when expenses will go up $3-4 million/quarter.

Prediction: You'll be saying the same thing, this time, next year.

See you then. In the meantime I'll be enjoying a couple hundred BD rentals in that time.

It's business. You have an emotional interest. Maybe they'll sell it off if it doesn't drop too low in number of subs.

I really don't see this happening. At least not without there being a substantial cost attached to it... and even then, it's iffy.

For myself, I get disc (blu-ray) from Netflix and I also have streaming. I rather get the disc from them and if it is worth a purchase I will wait for a sale then pick it up.

I have saved a lot of money by doing this. There have been countless movies that I thought would be good and happy that I did not blind buy. Now, if they decide to get out of the DVD or disc business that is fine by me but then they should expand the number of titles you can stream and stop giving us these old B flicks.

Just my opinion.

Cheers!

According to all the articles you've linked DVD by mail generated profits of $109M in the second quarter of this year. If expenses increased by $4M that quarterly profit would have plummeted to $105M.

Ouch.

Speaking of emotional interest, why do you act as if a division that generates almost half a billion dollars in profit per year is some sort of albatross?

$100M+ profit per quarter isn't exactly a burden, is it?

Netflix is sort of like what Best Buy used to be.

Queue management. I constantly shuffle things around based on my mood.

I always receive exactly what I want, exactly when I expect it.

In six years with Netflix, approximately 24 discs per month, I have received one disc one day later than anticipated. Once! And that was a USPS hiccup.

I hope Netflix never abandons physical media. For me it has been perfect. Convenient as hell, one day turnaraounds, and less than $1.00 per disc.

I think it is very possible that Netflix's DVD-by-mail business gets split off and sold. There is still some money to be made from that business but it is not a growth area anymore and that is what Wall Street wants to see from Netflix.

Will they actually get new releases on time?

Of course they get many releases on time. Delayed releases are that way due to the deals Netflix signed with the studios.

I personally could care less about Netflix offering titles for rent the same day they are available for purchase. If it's not a title I'm willing to blind buy I'm certainly not going to change my mind and purchase it anyway just because Netflix is not in a position to rent the given title right away. If I have to wait a number of weeks to rent the "physical" blu-ray so be it. There are plenty of other titles I can rent or purchase in the interim if I can't find anything else to do with myself. Should note as well that my "focus" has always been on renting "physical" media from Netflix. If Netflix were to go to a streaming only model I'd close my account and I'm sure I'd not be the only one.

There is a lot of info on cost per mile for transportation, I just used my AAA numbers for a sedan which was 60.8¢. You see, I had to purchase my vehicle, have it serviced, put a tag on it, cover it with insurance, put tires on, put fuel in it, etc., etc. Total cost ÷ number of miles = cost per mile, period.

Exactly. Most people overlook things like that, and only focus on gas...well it takes a lot more than gas to get you where you want to go.
