I like the fact that the deathblow is foreshadowed with the golliwag doll and tennis ball bang sound earlier.

Double foreshadowing FTW! Kubrick is a MONSTER!

However, I also don't totally agree with everything that was cut out of the Euro version.

What I think was wisely cut out of the film:
- many of the scenes with Wendy, Jack and Ullman touring the hotel slow down the pace of the film
- Shots of Wendy wheeling the breakfast to Jack
- Shortened shots of Jack throwing the tennis ball
- Pretty much all of Hallorann's trip from Florida to Colorado and all that Sno-cat stuff
- the shot of Wendy in the kitchen with the TV anchor talking about the search for the "missing Aspen woman" feels unnecessary
A LOT of these are playing on the FORESHADOWING and DOUBLING possible DOUBLING of what is to come!!

When Ullman is touring with them his right hand man is a doubling of Jack Torrence, the Adult twins leaving the Hotel (Ullman addresses) as well foreshadow the PLAY with us for ever and ever and ever Grady twin girls.

The Tennis sounds/audio if you listen are all important.

Snowcat is plot related.

TVs are never plugged into outlets = Supernatural Energy in the Hotel

You have to LOOK in this MOVIE. You have to LISTEN. Everything carries MEANING in THE SHINING.

I agree. I first saw the movie in the early 90’s and I was expecting a big showdown. Those hopes were quickly dashed. Your post makes me feel stronger that I don’t need to see a shorter cut.

But it also sucks you out of that sense of isolation when most of the movie would otherwise focus on the events taking place at the hotel instead.

Well said. Both novels are terrific.

Yeah, for me it's not worth cutting into that isolation just for the sake of a cheap laugh.

I’m sure Alister enjoys the longer cut for more than a laugh.,.and he’s going to get it. I think the EU is the greater of two evils and want that one.

Yeah, I find it more satisfying overall. I grew up with the shorter cut on VHS and then DVD, so I didnt see the extended cut until the Australian BD ended up being a direct port of the US disc. I'm definitely not keen to go back to the shorter one

Same. First borrowed it on Betamax in 1985. I remember thinking the film was a frustratingly empty experience as a piece of cinema. I grew to like it much more on repeat viewings, and was surprised and thrilled to discover the Australian Blu-ray was the ‘extended’ cut.

Wait, it is? Have I been watching the extended cut this whole time without realising? What's the biggest signifier of this cut?

A scene with a doctor and the mother at the apartment right after Danny’s first vision.

No that’s the version you’re getting. The EU version cuts all that stuff out.

The long version is pretty isolationist to me.

About 25 minutes worth of material is missing from the shorter (European Cut) version. That’s quite a bit of material. Now you know why I was so excited to finally get to see the longer (US Cut) version.
