Because of the discrepancy between the Blu and the UHD as far as framing, I'm
thinking I will just hang on to My Blu-ray copy instead of selling it as I had planned!

Wow the original transfer was really blown out in these shots, there's no detail outside the window it's just a blob of light but on the new transfer you can see the details in the trees and some blue sky peeking through in the background.

It looked stunning in theatres in 4K so this isn't surprising to me, but it's really cool to see it compared directly to the old blu.

I mean it's so minimal though I'd hardly even call it a discrepancy. If you're fine with watching an older master I guess that's up to you, but the 4K blows away the old disc in every conceivable way.

Ullman's office was part of the set, there's no "blue sky" back there to speak of!

It's more the highlights leaning towards dat Warners cyan tint that's making it look blue back there. The reflection of the ceiling lights in the windows is also much more prominent now.

It's pretty much forums law at this point. By all means kvetch about the colour but I'd never keep an old disc for such a small difference in framing.

What if the included blu-ray disc is exactly the same as the previous edition?

People are misunderstanding, I am still purchasing the new UHD version, I will just keep the old one as well instead of getting rid off it.

I've always wondered if the studios are really even concerned with mainstream success with the format. Trying to explain to your average consumer HDR, wide colour gamut for a start is hard enough. Let alone them knowing how to set their TVs correctly. They can't even turn interpolation off!

And yes most of them will still be using LCD TVS. OLEDs are a premium, and really are not that intuitive. I've had friends being so bemused by my C8 lol. Then there's also the matter of owning a 4K player

The general public will never care for 4K, blu ray has never replaced DVD. We live in a time when people don't even pay for Sky or cable because you can have any channel you want for pennies on your TV. The days of people paying decent money for films is long gone and it isn't coming back. Even with 4K films, they are digital files, many can stick them on a USB drive and it will be identical in every way to any UHD disc out there that needs a £100+ player to play it. It's not going to appeal to everyone and I don't think Warner Bros or any film company are expecting to sell millions of copies of discs anymore.

At least the blu ray is included and the old releases are easy to pick up

I'm wondering why someone would want to keep the old one if the new 4K edition also includes the exact same blu-ray disc. If the blu-ray disc that's included in the 4K box is different, then I understand.

I was about to sell my copy as well since I'm getting the new 4K edition.

Basically, I'm wondering if the blu-ray disc that's included is going to have a new transfer.

Ah Sky, the service people only get for the football. I keep wondering what idiot at BT thought buying a small fraction of the Premier League package would seriously be good for bussiness. Someone who's obviously never lived in the real world, or visited a pub in their life. Cause totally splitting the package is going to make people want to pay for your service.

Well then, that’s some impressive verisimilitude on Warner’s/Kubrick’s behalf.

The whole interior of the hotel is a giant set, even that massive lobby, several of those snow-bound exteriors are sets as well! Amazing production design.

Seems to me people are just seeing what they want to see from these caps, as many of the old caps looks just as good, sometimes even with seemingly better contrast than on the new ones. Hopefully the difference in motion is more pronounced.

Contrast was a key requirement during the shooting of the movie, but one of the problems with SDR converted UHD caps is that you're not getting the proper luminance which is why they can look flatter and dimmer.

I'm excited because of how filmic it appears in the caps, but any perceived issues regarding brightness, contrast and to some extent colour are best left to seeing it in motion.

The UHD caps are down converted to SDR @ 100 nits.

Does anyone know what stuff Kelvin Pike shot on the Shining? I wrote to him a couple of years ago, but was more concerned about his involvement in The Empire Strikes Back back then and got a nice card and image signed. Wished I’d asked him.
