Just watched this again and the sync is fine. The ADR however is more notable on this disc for some reason.

Too bad they didn’t make TVs 1.66. 1.78 is not a visually pleasant shape.

It’s too wide. Any rectangle that’s not a square should follow the golden ratio of 1.62. That is what’s naturally pleasant to the human eye. Since a lot of movies are in 1.66, that’s what is closest and should have been used. I’m assuming a group of blind people were responsible for 1.78.

A visually pleasant shape is in the eye of the beholder.

1.78:1 is a pretty good compromise. Just be thankful they didn't make the standard ratio of HDTVs 2.55:1 or something ridiculous.

I would've liked to see 2:1 become the norm, it would have minimal bars top and bottom with 'scope material (Ultra Panavision 2.76 notwithstanding) and 1.85 would only need small side bars. 1.33 stuff would need bigger side borders but it'd be nothing like watching 1.33 on a 'scope TV, lemme tell ya!

Dude, totally with you on that. 2:1 is the perfect middle ground, and how many films are formatted in Ultra Pan 70mm?

It was chosen as it's the exact geometric mean for displaying 1.33:1 and 2.35:1 content.

I'd also like widescreen TV's to be 2:1. My favourite aspect ratios are 2.35:1 and 2.40:1, which are almost the same.
I'm not a fan of 1.85:1, I've seen some movies ruined by this aspect ratio like Jurassic Park, that would have looked outstanding on 2.35/2.40:1, it would have been a more involving and interactive experience.
