Remastered looks better, the native 4k resolution scan makes it look detailed without the need to add artificial sharpness (as can be seen in the 2007 bluray), the light grain structure also gives it a more filmic look. Clearly more details can be seen in the bright areas and the color palette is warmer.

"Nothing. There ain't nothing in Room 237, but you ain't got no business going in there anyway, so stay out! You understand, stay out!"

Definitely warmer colors like T2 guy stated, those minor small scratches in the film are unnoticeable now, looks clearer and smoother.

No Mono track and the Aspect ratio is worse, but you probably won't notice it I'm the only one that did. Easy to see when Halloran flys back. Kubrick would have never let that planes wing clip out of frame /intended ratio. But hey gotta crank out 4ks ricky bobby fast so now it does.

pics for visual aid You can even read those yellow numbers on the side of the plane easier. I didn't use the 4K disc.

Thanks guys. Yeah, indeed colors are now warmer. Walls in interior shots are pale yellow instead of white and nighttime shots in the snow are gray instead of blue. I wonder which style is more faithful to the LD master.

As for the cropping, perhaps their research showed that this framing is more accurate. It isn't a huge problem for this film, because it has a lot of negative space, but I feel that once you open up the frame for home video, you can never go back, even if it is more correct, because it somehow feels like a downgrade.

The only thing that I'm skeptical about is the HDR to SDR conversion. Did they fine-tune the color grade for the regular Blu-ray or did they perform an automatic conversion? The absence of pure white in the brightest spots was what tipped me off.

HDR on UHD fixes those problems.

Nah, Warner has done it with other titles, too, such as GREMLINS. It’s not catastrophic but it is in error.

Since Kubrick uses a lot more meticulous framing and symmetry than the average filmmaker, it makes it worse than most other cases where Warner has done this (Gremlins I imagine being one example where it's not as bad). Not catastrophic though, as you say, but it definitely bothers me.

It’s not ideal, I certainly agree.

The Hollywood Reporter has a nice piece on actress Shelley Duvall today. She retired from acting in the 90s and sort of disappeared before popping up in a rather alarming appearance on Dr. Phil a few years back. Good to see she seems to be doing well.

I was glad to hear that SD is doing well. The Dr. Phil special from a few years ago broke my heart.

Great article thank you for posting.

Dr. Phil really did a number on her, took advantage for ratings...F him.

Glad she's doing well.

I remember seeing Shelley Duvall every week hosting Faerie Tale Theater when I was a kid. OMG, the Three Little Pigs episode is absolute gold with Jeff Goldblum as the wolf.

Found this interesting tweet while this site was down:

Anyone have The Shining on 4K and can check something for me? My 4K has weird pink cast most noticeable in brightly lit scenes. Shows up both in rip as well as projected from original disc.

(The tweet has caps of the car interior with the rim of Shelley’s face and Danny’s hair sporting a pink tint - check out the link above)

Watch this scene and see if you see a pink blob on the left side of Danny’s hair.

For those are unaware, Lee Unkrich is a director and editor for Pixar, known for Toy Story 3 and Coco.

I wish I had this keen observation skill... but I guess years of staring at frame by frame of academy award winning features gives you an advantage

It's probably the sub sampling. Warner returned to the original colour timing.

There’s definitely a pink blob on the side of Danny’s face in that scene, note how it conforms to the dimensions of the car window. If I had to guess it looks like a power window they’ve used in the grading to pull up/down the brightness of the actual window behind Danny, but no-one thought to roto around his face.

Reminds me a little of what was done to the windows of the Orca during the USS Indianapolis scene in JAWS' UHD, they made them much darker and bluer but the roto around Messrs Shaw and Dreyfus is rather sloppy.

Wasn't there also something like that in Unforgiven?
