The one continuity error that always tickled me in The Shining is the case of Danny's sandwich at the dinner table. It goes from having a few bite marks to pretty much collapsing in the space of a few seconds.

Anyone seen this video?

I turned it off after 25 minutes because I can’t take number “coincidences” seriously. It talks about room 237 and tries to link it with what happens at 2:37, the 237th frame, the staircase having 23 steps followed by seven steps, etc. These are just a few that I remember and the video is almost as long as the movie.

I doubt Kubrick would be as number-obsessed as this video hypothesizes because what would be the point? He would have had to constantly adjust the timing of certain scenes just so that some “coincidence” can appear at frame 237 or 732 or 3:72 or 7:23 into the movie, etc. If someone is looking for coincidences of anything they will find them. Doesn’t mean that it actually means anything. Kubrick is a better filmmaker than that.

So I was playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors on an emulator and actually noticed the main notes of The Shining theme replicated on a piece of music in the game. Thought that was pretty cool.

The ghosts of the Overlook did it.

That's my head canon.

That video in a nutshell:

I do appreciate the effort, though!

Kubrick would also film all the rehearsals, which added to his legendary take count. He didn't want to miss capturing anything. And he would use any excuse to shoot more takes, so he would be technically very demanding, but like you said, if a take had the most "interesting" performance in it but also had some small technical problem, that's the one he'd end up using, technical problem be damned (I think Leon Vitali mentioned in an interview a scene in EYES WIDE SHUT with a very obvious "bump" in the middle of a dolly shot as an example of this).

He payed for and produced everything out of his own pockets so of course he's going to take 40+ takes and knock every horror movie down a few pegs and take the mountaintop. No other way children.

The Room 237 doc is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my life.

The "Room 237" doc doesn't actually take the theories it presents seriously, it just presents them (that is, the documentary itself isn't presenting some wild theory about Kubrick's THE SHINING, it's just presenting other people's theories). I found it amusing to watch in that way.

Well you watched the wrong thing as it was never trying to be a "making of". I found it an enjoyable watch of wack theories.

I'm hoping that someday, the Kubrick estate allows somebody to dive into that 60 hours of raw behind-the-scenes of THE SHINING footage that Vivian shot and put together a much longer making-of doc. And then there's also that footage she shot during the making of FULL METAL JACKET that only small snippets have been released of. Seems like such a waste to just leave that footage in storage unseen.

If “special” is another word for “dealing in facts” then yeah, I’m the Special One. Still, just being able to tout facts is so rare these days it’s like having a fookin superpower
