When you do hundreds of takes then of course continuity is going to be screwed. Scorsese has dreadful continuity (Paulie’s cigarette grows and shrinks several times in the space or seconds) but people don’t read elaborate hidden meanings into it.

That shot, which is gorgeous and also spooky given the implications, is removed in the Euro cut. The removal makes for a fantastic jarring transition to Bartok's "Music for Strings..." as Danny enters his parents' room and also fits with the total excision of TV footage while the Torrances are staying at the Overlook in the Euro cut. But it's also possible it was a legit mistake by Kubrick that he took the opportunity to fix. After all, he seemed to go out of his way to remove the skeletons (a very brief scene that has little impact on pacing like most of the other cuts) that seem to bother some viewers.

Not trying to start another American cut vs Euro cut debate btw. I just find Kubrick's editing process between the two releases fascinating. The removal of the skeletons is particularly curious since I believe it's the only change made in the last half hour of the film and it's of little consequence. |

Not to tempt fate with another argument, I'll just add that my favourite edit in the Euro cut is the first one:
Danny's in front of the bathroom mirror, has his vision of the bloody elevator, camera lens is covered in blood, black screen, cut to CLOSING DAY. EDIT: I guess it's the second. The first is cutting a minute and a half of Jack's interview. Last edited by KevinStriker; 07-13-2021 at 04:17 AM. |

Yes! The musical transitional between the two scenes is phenomenal as well. A lot of the edits made to the Euro cut lead to jarring transitions, for better or worse, but that one feels totally organic. Just thinking out loud but it almost makes me wonder if Kubrick decided on keeping the doctor scene late in the American cut's editing process.

My god what a let down this 4k disc was, it seemed like it hadn't been remastered since the DVD days. ( It even has the 1.78 aspect ratio that the previous releases were plagued with) I give the picture quality 3/5. Was a MAJOR disappointment for me, since the movie itself is brilliant.

He's said something similar in the Jaws 4K thread, might just be stirring sh!t.
I'm not sure it's entirely fair to expect a world more detail than we already have from a movie shot open-matte with 18mm lenses in 1979. However, it does a helluvalot to... correct the previous Blu-ray. |

Is Jack racist?
He seems pretty chill with Hallorann, but when Grady shows up he warns him of a ‘ni**er cook’ and Jack seems pretty horrified at the concept. Is Grady’s racism a projection of Jack’s, or is Grady just a racist ghost? |

Grady is a projection of the hotel, he's a previous victim just like Jack. I don't even think Grady is necessarily the ghost of the former caretaker, more like something far older and fouler. In the book, the entity that possesses Jack leaves his body after he dies and continues to torment Danny as he's leaving. It's more likely that Grady was possessed by the exact same entity, which is using his appearance as an avatar to communicate with Jack while simultaneously taking over his mind.
