It's also a wonderfully trolling moment from Kubrick to readers of the novel.
I mean, the film is way too iconic now, but without Halloran, even somebody in 1980 who read the book likely won't anticipate where the climax of the film will end up. |

The Hotel IS full of HATE. Pretty obvious stuff guys.
[Show spoiler] ![]() It's poster even has the line "The Tide of Terror that Swept America is Here." That could reference any violence you can think of be it wars WW2, Civil War, American Indian Wars etc. Last edited by KubrickKurasawa; 07-14-2021 at 04:16 AM. |

Yes no problem with the vertical framing, but in my opinion it messes with the sometimes meticulous framing on the sides. But you can form your own opinion by comparing the screenshots with the old blu ray.

My thoughts are largely the same as Alister's. The screenshots only mean to illustrate that the 4K's framing isn't hiding all that much, and the DVD shows even less horizontal info. |

Open matte just means more information on the top/bottom so I didn’t know you referred to the dvd, which indeed has even less info on the sides. In agreement then. |

While many will find the discussion of race and racism tiresome, I find it endlessly fascinating. Context is everything. Looking back on my life I can't help but chuckle over the number of times I've been called a n****r and told to "go back to where I came from" by people who were obviously NOT born in my home and native land. Even funnier is the number of times my white children have admonished me over the years with cries of "daddy.. you can't say that... THAT'S RACIST/HOMOPHOBIC/MYSOGINISTIC...
Grady is not racist in the 1920s, because racism didn't exist in his time. He is racist in the 1980s as his use of the n word inspires Jack's reaction. Jack is not racist in the 1980s but he surely is in 2021.. Oh and this disc along with the 4K of The Deerhunter are my pride and joy for showing off my HT... They literally bring me to tears when I pop them in and get sucked into hours of movie magic. |

Especially since Grady may well be a projection of Jack’s crumbling mind (albeit energised by the hotel’s power), then there’s ‘white man’s burden’, and we can’t be sure if ‘a nig**r?’ means: a) Grady dude WTF that word’s not cool, or b) The outside party is a nig**r? Just my fuc**ng luck ![]() Grady’s a manipulative ghost-butler if ever there was one, and I suspect he knew what he was doing adding that detail about Jack’s approaching antagonist. |

Yeah, and Blowbear can be one of the ghosts Grady has to ‘bust’. He’d be this series’ equivalent of Slimer.
