If the glue layer has a breakdown and lets air in and oxidizes, for one. Or if the disc was bent too extremely getting it out of the case, for another.

I watched THE SHINING on 4K UHD Blu-ray last night, and something strange happened. The last two times I watched the UHD disc of the film, it played perfectly fine. That's a relief for me, but I'll have to watch it again eventually just to be sure that everything's okay.

I’m currently watching this and noticed a few things. In the establishing shot of the hotel when Jack arrives with his family, to the left of the parking lot you can see a ski lift (so much for no skiing). Also,

[Show spoiler]when Jack goes into the gold room and talks to Lloyd he mentions coming off the wagon after 5 months, but he supposedly stopped drinking after dislocating Danny’s arm, which according to Jack happened 3 years ago. That’s either a goof or Jack has been lying about his drinking.

That second one I noticed for the first time too when I watched the movie last night. It's also possible it was Wendy that was lying to the doctor. I believe it's only from her that we learn that he stopped right after the incident.

I always took the 2nd part as being more evidence of Wendy basically enabling Jack rather than an error. While he may have

[Show spoiler]indeed initially quit drinking 3-years prior when he injured Danny, he obviously had a "slip" at some point after that, hence Wendy's comment about no alcohol for "5 months". Jack is clearly unable to completely get away from the bottle, he may be able to quit for a while but he always goes back

Well, what she says is that

Yeah, if I remember in the book

[Show spoiler]Jack keeps drinking after hurting Danny, and only stops after another incident. Maybe that’s what they were getting at, or maybe I’m just overthinking it. I guess that’s what happens when you’ve seen the movie a lot.

Geez. I hope we don’t have to start boiling the discs like some HD DVD users did when they suffered playback problems.

In the book and also the original treatment for the film, Jack assaults a student at the high school he was teaching at. That's probably what happened "5 months ago" vs. when Jack hurt Danny "3 goddamn years ago" as a toddler.

I must say that that was my happiest time in all the time I was in the film industry. My experience of working with Stanley was extremely easy and harmonious.
