Never seen the International version, but a shorter version does not sound appealing to me.

I think the pacing is far better. When I first watched the 4K I was thinking how the pacing of the film felt glacial compared with my memory of it. Then the silly skeletons showed up and I went "hold up!".

Watching the 4K again the other night, I think Kubrick was absolutely right to make the cuts. The additional scenes slow the film down, really don't add anything of value and those skeletons just see the film veer too much into goofy camp horror. The reveal of Jack hurting Danny is far better revealed at the bar than during that crappy scene at the beginning.

Edit: For those interested.

I get it, but I'm fine with the pacing. Maybe I'll check it out one day.

Since this is apparently being debated again, I watched the International Cut again: It's still distracting and painfully obvious there are scenes missing. The film uses so many cross dissolves that a hard cut in video and audio indicates "There was a scene here. It's gone now."

All I ever watched before the 4K was the International Cut, I never felt that there were scenes missing. When I finally watched the US Cut all the new scenes were distracting and it was painfully obvious that it made the movie feel bloated.

I often prefer shorter theatrical cuts to some beloved extended versions, but this is one case in which the longer cut is definitely my favorite. The slower pacing is actually a feature, not a bug, making us feel like we've been stuck in that hotel all winter with the Torrances. The steadily mounting sense of dread is all the more powerful for it. It definitely makes me FEEL the place and get sucked into the atmosphere much more than the shorter European cut, which is an interesting alternate take and I see why people dig it, but it just lacks some of the mood and impact of the longer cut for me.

I feel the exact same way with the US theatrical cut. The shorter version is fun to check out but is in my opinion inferior since its way too fast.

OK lets ask ourselves a simple little question here.

Why would Wendy see Ghost's/Skeletons in the Hotel?

Would she have seen Delbert Grady
[Show spoiler]let Jack out of the freezer?
I think so. It's the moment Kubrick makes things manifest.

This is the first truly great psychological film in film history. So lets listen to old KK dissect it for you guys!

[Show spoiler]Let's recap....

Jack promised earlier when Danny went to get his red fire truck engine that he would never ever ever hurt Danny or Wendy. Danny trusts his Dad because they all have psychological scars/problems, and Jack tells him he would never ever hurt him and he loves him more than anything else in the whole wide world, and would never do anything in the world to ever hurt him. In case you wondered.

His mother also told him that he'd have great time at the hotel way earlier in the film. That's how Jack is let out. He lies to his son Danny. Danny has psychological abuse related problems. No way you say? Just listen to the little kid sounding knocks at the walk in freezer door, before Jack wakes up and slips back into psychosis and imagines he is talking to Grady who murdered his 2 girls. It's also possible that Jack has Dissociative disorder. Dissociative disorders are mental disorders that involve experiencing a disconnection and lack of continuity between thoughts, memories, surroundings, actions and identity.

Yes, those knocks are the sound of a little child/toddler/kid etc. not a big old Ghost man! Can't you ever tell when a kid knocks on your door trying to sell cookies for school and the difference between an adult salesman? BINGO! But you say nope, nope, nope, like Jordan Banana Peele? Ok. Here me out.

Jack has a psychotic break way, way, way, before He even gets into it with his wife and she fears for her life and she whacks him over the head with a baseball bat.

Remember she discovers the typewriter with the repeating lines for hundreds of pages basically. Jack cracked at the typewriter, he cracked at the bar, he cracked in the restrooms etc. he cracks all over this hotel. Might he be cracked in the walk in freezer? I say YES!

Anyway after that ordeal he is dragged and is locked in the walk in freezer by his wife.

Wendy is shown later exhausted and goes upstairs and falls asleep/naps.

Kubrick then Cuts to Danny in a psychotic break upstairs in their bedroom with his Mom asleep. (Remember Jack and Danny break into psychosis whenever they look in mirrors or simply walk past them! (Bathroom Mirrors, Tony, Bartender, Bedroom Mirrors, Room 237, gold room mirrors etc.) He grabs Moms lipstick and Knife and writes REDRUM on a door chanting REDRUM like 40+x similar to his Dad writing 40+ pages on that typewriter they both have psychological problems. Remember bedroom mirror sets Danny off again most likely.

This is why Wendy see's Skeletons and Ghosts late in the film. She BREAKS too eventually! She looks into the abyss of this mirror and SNAPS into psychosis like Jack and Danny finally!

Now the definition.

Psychosis (also called a 'psychotic experience' or 'psychotic episode') is when you perceive or interpret reality in a very different way from people around you. You might be said to 'lose touch' with reality.

Kubrick uses MIRRORS to trigger psychosis in his characters in THIS FILM and try's to manipulate YOU the audience into believing that Jack is speaking with The Caretaker/Grady when he is just simply psychotic and having another of his many episodes/ notice the mirror like finish of the walk in freezer door! See Kubrick is just at the top of his game here he is doing what no other filmmaker ever did for his time! He tricks the entire audience!
That's how you know Jack is in another psychotic break! And not speaking to Ghosts like King would have you believe, but no this is simply Kubrick's master psychological film.

But really Danny made a mistake and unlocked it, knocked on the door, waited to here his Dad getting up (he knocks over boxes of food) and then skedaddled.

If you understand psychosis and family psychological abuse. You try to help people that you shouldn't etc. It might not make sense to you but this is Kubrick's film. If you want Ghosts go read Kings version.

You have to understand how psychology and psychosis work to understand this film and what is really going on. But it's NOT GHOSTS.

Jack
Wendy
Danny

They ALL 3 have psychological mental disorders. These characters "BREAK" at different points throughout Kubrick's tale, and the main characters have problems with Mirrors. This is not Stephen Kings The Shining. Kubrick takes the skeletons of the story and re imagines it his way! He psychologically abuses the audiences YOU who think it's going to be Kings take. Nope! No possessed shrubs here. So... forget what you know this is 100% Psychological Horror put to celluloid not paper.

Do they all look normal to you here? LOL nope. These are shots from them in their broken psychological states.

They DON'T SEE GHOSTS. They have psychological episodes from psychosis!

Why do you think you hear of a mass shooting spree on the news almost daily? Someone breaks. Now, don't let it be you! Spooky!! This is why the LONG Cut is Definitive it explains all of their actions through psychology/psychosis. The shorter cut leaves out a lot of the clues. Which might be another reason this film lives on in infamy and is so difficult for people to wrap their heads around. I would only watch the uncut version to understand it and the edited version if you wish to be confused as all hell.

I hope you all enjoy my film analysis Good day sirs!
