I actually DID see it opening weekend in NYC.

I also saw 2001 opening weekend, so I saw the now long gone 19 minutes.

Probably not many of us around who can say that about both.

Of course, I was all of 7 when I saw 2001, so I remember nothing of the missing footage (other than what I've read since), but I was so obsessed as a little kid that I made my dad take me back the next week, and did notice there was something 'wrong' (at least that's the family legend).

As for The Shining, I don't remember it being an awful scene. The slightly campy 'end of Pyscho' feeling seemed to fit the way the film was a horror film while teasing/satirizing horror tropes at the same time (e.g. the cobwebs and skeletons right out of the horror films Wendy would have watched).

Of course, I wasn't watching the scene thinking 'this will be gone and never seen again', so I was much more into the experience of the whole film than trying to remember details of what felt like a bit of a self-teasing obligatory wrap up scene.

Hats off to cool parents and other adults who help encourage cinephilia!

LOL, I suppose it could be.

For me, it's the otherwise forgotten family friend who took me to see Blade Runner when it finally hit the screens in the small town where I lived.

OH! Sounds more like Filmophelia. I was worried there for a moment. You can never be too careful when those lights go down.

I watched my copy the other night for the first time in it's entirety. Wow! Such an amazing transfer. Really sucked me into the atmosphere. It's the best I've ever seen the film presented before.

I know it’s a small thing, but I’m still thrown off by the lack of the Saul Bass logo, especially when Bass designed the iconic poster.

Yeah, they are. Some of the recent photos that have surfaced are even just screengrabs from a video of Lee Unkrich's presentation about his Taschen book, and they were color corrected. You can tell from the distortion on the sides of the photos.
Here's Lee's great talking/presentation (from March 2023):

And compare with the images here, particularly at the bottom of the page (posted September 2023):

Curious. When the film was released, there was a mention in either Film Comment or American Cinematographer (both of which had articles on it IIRC) of a dummy Jack head that would split open revealing worms. I've never heard mention of this since.

It's Warner, 99.9999% it is no longer good. Sucks they got all technical on that, codes used to be live for years after printed expiration date, now they are gone at midnight of the date.

WB will probably send a collections agency to your house demanding interest on an unused code that old.

The worst thing about the 4k is the lack of the shorter cut, which is the only cut I'll watch.

The reason I bought the UK limited edition 4K from Zavvi is because it also included the international cut of the film (albeit only in 1080p), but it was really only for completist's sake. I think the US cut is undoubtedly the superior cut of the film and the longer running time really complements Jack's slow descent into total madness. The international cut just feels sorta neutered IMO, especially having grown up with the US cut.

With that said though, I still think Warner should've included both cuts in 4K like they did with The Exorcist.
