It’s essentially just a damage control cut.

People in here not realising the power Kubrick had

If he wanted one cut and the other gone, shit would be gone overnight.
Are we to only have the cut EWS from now on?

And I fail to see why they cannot have us see both cuts.

This duality with a different cut on each site of the big pond is part of the history of The Shining and that was maintained for the whole lifetime of Kubrick and ever since.

Having one cut eliminated just takes away from The Shining. I cannot see why anybody could be satisfied with that solution.

He did exercise that power with the hospital scene. Sending a telegram to all the projectionists to cut it out early into the U.S. theatrical run, then having somebody from the studio catalogue the discarded clip, and returned to the studio to be destroyed.
And yet, the US Cut and EU Cut remained unique to their regions on home video for decades now, could be he was fond of both cuts for different reasons (much like I am, if we're all still picking sides over this).

Wasn't he dead when WB added the uncanny valley CGI people to the orgy?

The BFI think that he was in favour of both cuts.

May be wrong but he fully singed off on EWS

I could be wrong too, I forget how soon after EWS's completion/how close to the premiere he passed away.

How is it silly if you're marketing a mainstream (meaning Hollywood - this ain't no European arthouse) narrative film that one would be concerned about the running time and pacing?? If you make your movie too long and boring you lose your audience and suffer at the box office because of it. As much of an artist as Kubrick was, this also was his job at the end of the day and he needed to make money.

It is not a damage control cut, it would be one thing if the studio intervened and made a bunch of cuts against Kubrick's wishes a la Blade Runner, but that's not what happened. Discredit the Euro cut all you want but guess what? It exists. We have two official cuts that were approved by Kubrick himself whether you like it or not.

Yeah, it might have been an MPAA note after he died.

EDIT,
Yeah depending on who you listen to it was miles off finished, half finished and he hated it or finished and he loved it.
Eh....

Apparently that was his locked final cut of the film, with only some music left to complete and the contractual obligation to deliver an 'R' rating still hanging over it. His daughter Katharina said that he'd probably have substituted some cutaways to Cruise to get around the naughtiest bits, but because it was also contractually obliged that no-one but SK could physically re-edit the film they had to resort to the CG cut and paste jobs whilst not technically 'removing' a single frame of it.

I've only seen the US cut. The European Cut might be interesting to watch, But I suspect I have seen the US version often enough that I would just fill in the missing spots and miss the actual effect of that version.

The blue end titles would be interesting, but probably don't add much to the experience. I can imagine that the blue text could look messy on VHS.

I do find it mildly humorous that Stanley Kubrik can cut a film after it was released, and then cut it again for some territories and there is no demand that the original release be issued because Kubrik is a great auteur. While someone else editing his own movies later is widely scorned as a raper of childhoods.

Very few people saw the hospital scene in the first screenings and the American (longer) cut has always been available for import if necessary. Ditto for the Euro version. The fact that the two 'approved' cuts were strictly segregated by market kept a lot of people, myself included, from even knowing there were multiple cuts. So not really comparable to Lucas.

And I must have seen the American cut 30+ times before my first viewing of the Euro cut. I definitely found myself 'filling in the missing spots' initially but I still knew I liked what I was seeing. It's now my preferred cut and the edits are becoming less and less jarring with each subsequent viewing (I probably watch The Shining more than any other film).

What happens in that last chapter that he had to omit?? :O

The American version of the book did not contain the last chapter as the American publishers felt the last chapter totally messed up the message of the book. Kubrik adapted the movie after reading the American version, and supposedly when he found out there was another chapter in the UK chose not to change his movie, essentially agreeing with the American publishers.

The last chapter is apparently a happy ending deal that many feel is not consistent with the main character.

Yup, as a tape trader 'back in the day' the TV 'long cut' of The Shining was a high demand item! It was only ever shown once every three years or something ridiculous. I remember staying up to cut the ads out!
