It's so completely different than Kubrick's film that you may as well just read it now to pass the time. They're totally different animals. Having read it twice, I personally prefer the film, and it isn't particularly close.

Reading's hard.
For the authentic The Shining experience, I spend 48 hours reading YouTube comments, grab my axe, winter woolies, engage Clint Eastwood Eye™ and head to the nearest hedge-maze during Family Fun Day. |

Excited to have this one to the collection for Halloween. Will probably have some people over to watch it in the theater room!

The Shining is a pretty easy book to read especially if you are familiar with the film already. A little long, but not difficult.

The Stand I can't say for sure because I haven't yet read the first edition. From what I understand, it's hundreds of pages shorter and more streamlined than the Complete and Uncut Edition you can find everywhere in trade paperback, which while I liked it had a large portion dedicated to the government and the origins of the virus which felt unnecessary.
IT, on the other hand, if somebody told me it was the best novel Stephen King ever wrote, I couldn't vehemently argue. Plenty of parts of that book that never made it into either adaptation which chilled me to the bone, like a certain chapter early on involving a bridge... |

By the way, that particular passage you're referring to? It'll be in It: Chapter Two. |

Try The Dark Tower series. I've only read the first 2 books, but they were fantastic and easy to read. Lots of action and humor and an epic feel to them.
