Talked with Leon Vitali for a bit tonight. Asked him which cut of The Shining Kubrick preferred, hoping to put an end to the matter once and for all. His answer: "It's hard to say." He did at least confirm the European cut was made for commercial reasons.

Also asked him about Eyes Wide Shut 4K. He said that it is indeed coming, but they haven't done the Full Metal Jacket 4K restoration yet, and that obviously has to come first. So it probably won't be for a while, but at least it's on the cards

The documentary on Leo is fascinating.

I hope he’s doing okay.

...sounded like his decades long devotion to Kubrick left him with very little to show for it.

He is a very lovely man, that's for sure. Even overheard him giving his email address to random fans. Talks to everyone who comes up to him at screenings and is very gracious with his time.

If the book wasn't good, or at least didn't have something good about it, Stanley Kubrick sure as hell wouldn't have made a movie that was based on it.

When he does these meet and greets with fans and Q&As does no one ever want to ask him about the original ending of The Shining and if it still exists? It would be good to know once and for all what exists and what doesn't exist. Same with Eyes Wide Shut and the reported 20 minutes Warner Bros cut out of it.

I'm not entirely sure why FMJ "obviously" needs to come first?

The book is fantastic and infinitely superior to the film, but as King explained it at length, the film is a very loose adaptation and it is a poor adaptation. I'm paraphrasing him but Jack is clearly nuts from the start in the film, there's no descent into insanity, there's no depth to the characters but hey, it's still a great film.

The miniseries is actually pretty good and obviously super faithful as King himself wrote the adaptation.

Warner Bros never cut anything from EWS.

The only difference made to Eyes are the CGI people if I'm not mistaken, the rest should be identical.

Indeed, but conspiracy theorists who believe Kubrick was killed by the Illuminati for exposing their secrets on the film also believe Warner cut a 20-minute sequence containing child sacrifice and cannibalism.

Oh contraire. The miniseries was lousy, King or no King involvement. Stephen has a hard time adapting himself to a visual medium and The Shining miniseries is but one example. Kubrick's adaptation at least gives you an unsettled feeling and the haunted hotel room gave many a viewer the heebie jeebies.

I will admit, if this were to be true, this be one hell of a deleted bunch of minutes that I'd like to see!

Nor me. I've never been a fan of it to be honest. EWS on the other hand....

That artwork is atrocious. The steelbook is better, but I hate steelbooks. Dilemma.

Seems they're going in release order. Also one of them is a better seller, and it unfortunately ain't EWS.

It seems they are not. Where's Barry Lindon, that one came after Clockwork Orange and before The Sinning.

Yes, that was the only change, and it was solely done to get an R rating in the US (which was part of Kubrick’s contract). I remember Tom Cruise standing by it saying “not one frame’ of the movie was cut, since it was just the CGI blocking put in, and which Kubrick apparently supported in theory over cutting footage, though of course he died before being able to oversee the changes.

I think they may have been referring to completing the actual 4K transfer, which we know that Warners have already done for Lyndon. As & when it hits UHD is anyone's guess.
